The fix for me was upgrading to the latest beta.

I'm fairly certain that .57b (or .57 Beta 2) is the latest beta. Continued
assistance appreciated.

I am still getting this error and i've had it since my 11.04 upgrade.
I figured it would be fixed with an update soon enough...that didn't happen.
ubuntu 11.04
downloaded from the software center, i believe.
.56 build 890
many issues arose with the upgrade and no support has been given about most of
them, hoping this one is different.
thanks

Ok, I see what is happening, you're missing a header videodev.h... I'll have to
validate against an older version of the kernel as I currently hava 3.0 kernel,
and the file is now named videodev2.h
Let me check my Ubuntu 11.04 setup first

Same error, Linux Mint, (Based on Ubuntu 11.04 i believe), no solution as yet,
worked fine when first installed, i assume some update killed it.

Could you tell me if installing libv4l-0 and libv4l-dev would fix the issue...
It is a compatibility layer with v4l. In Ubuntu, it seems to be installed by
default

I was also getting the "Could not load module" error.
When I ran "sudo /etc/init.d/webcamstudio start" in the terminal as directed
here, I got this message:
"Starting WebcamStudio kernel module: webcamstudioBuilding webcamstudio
driver...
make -C /lib/modules/`uname -r`/build M=/tmp/webcamstudio-src modules
make: *** /lib/modules/3.5.0-17-generic/build: No such file or directory. Stop.

make: *** /lib/modules/3.5.0-17-generic/build: No such file or directory. Stop.
make: *** [install] Error 2
Modprobe webcamstudio failed. Please use 'dmesg' to find out why."
Then I figured that it was a dependency error, and install the
"linux-headers-3.5.0-17-generic" package. When I ran "sudo dpkg -i
webcamstudio.deb" again, then I got this message:

This is what i made:
On a fresh ubuntu 64 installation:
I installed:
From Software Center:
- openjdk java 6 runtime
- Cheese
- Synaptic package manager
From Synaptic Package Manager:
- Openjdk-6-jdk
- linux-headers-generic (or the headers for your kernel)
Then i installed WebcamStudio057_Build217_X64.deb simply double clicking on it.
You can find it here:
https://docs.google.com/file/d/0BxkZ_wh6t7jbNUdGcWxHSFUyUFk/edit?usp=sharing
If i start WCS i get an error "the webcamstudio module was not loaded"
So i installed the v4l2loopback device with the command:
sudo apt-get install v4l2loopback-dkms
and at the end i loaded the virtual webcam module with the command:
sudo modprobe v4l2loopback
If i start WCS i get the same error but when the interface comes up i can see
the Dummy Video Device Video0.
I tested it with cheese and it works !!!
The only thing is that i have to reload the v4l2loopback module every time i
reboot the machine.
Have a nice day.
PS: When i restart the VM machine i load the v4l2loopback module and then i try
to load WCS. With my surprise i can see that also the webcamstudio module was
On !!!
Please let me know if it works for you.

WCS r467 fixes all current kernel mode issues. It has been synced with the
v4l2loopback module too...
Please use WCS versions above r467

Yup problem still exists. I did find out that webcamstudio was built with Java
6 JDK, not 7. If you are using 7, you may run into issues.
I haven't fixed the issue yet... but working on it.
