Autofocus usually works, but on a rare occasion, it has issues. In this case, the camera won't take a photo.
With gPhoto, the full error message is "Canon EOS Capture failed to release: Perhaps no focus?"
With EOS Utility, the error message is "Focus failure."
The easy solution is to switch to manual focus.
