Project Meeting 10/19/21

Review of Midterm Progress

The meeting began with a brief discussion of what we as a group had manage to accomplish for our Midterm, where Ben had commented that we had accomplished a majority of what we were assigned to have done by our extended deadline of 10/19/21.

XSLT Preview

Ben then introduced us to XSLT, for the sake of showing us how certain elements in XML can be converted into basic HTML or how we could potentially collate all of our documents into a single document. He also showed us some of the work he and his group completed for their project last semester as an example of how to change basic XML markup into graphs for use on our website. This was done to get us thinking about our web presence, since we have officially finished all of our document markup as of the completion of our Midterm assignment, and can now move on to designing our website.

Web Presence Discussion

We began to discuss how best to approach creating our website for this project, bouncing ideas of page layouts and homepage formatting off of each other by way of discussing three previous course projects. Additionally, we divvied up the work of designing the actual website, with Matt taking the lead on coding the HTML, Allison writing up the markup methodology, and myself handling the more artistic aspects of the site's layout, color scheme, etc. Allison also brought the question of whether or not to use Grid or Flexbox within our project, and we as a group decided to make that call during next week's meeting as we were nearly out of time by this point.

Discussion of Markup Methodology

As suggested by Ben, we decided to include a section on our website dedicated to explaining our markup methodology, to make it as easy as possible for someone who whishes to use our site for research to understand how/why we marked up our corpus in the way we did. The section will consist of brief yet informative definitions of each factor as well as examples of each factor as it appears within our corpus.

Goals for Next Week

Thanks for the update, Jacob! We really appreciate how you have formatted each section of your notes with markdown; it makes it very easy to see your team's progress and planning system. We look forward to seeing how your project page is designed (and congratulations on completing your midterm tasks)!

Monthly Project Response— meant to submit it yesterday!

This project is looking really impressive so far. This particular update is succinct and clear about what you've been up to— I think it's impressive how far you've gotten along in terms of looking towards your web presence, both in terms of what kind of technologies you intend to use and in terms of considering how you may transform your data. I'm curious to see how you will select the best graph types to match your data, in terms of what looks best and makes the most sense. I also think it's very cool how you're dividing up the work on the website, specializing in terms of what people are most comfortable working with. I think my group should do the same!
