(Copied from the last workshop)

Note for next time: At the moment, we have only 17/28 of attendees from KIT, and still at least 5 people from KIT in the waiting list. It could be better to prioritize people from KIT in some way. That is what we try to do by advertising on the RSE@KIT mailing list first, but it seems that a lot of people at KIT are not reachable (yet) through that mailing list.

I propose to send this:

Dear all,

I am glad to announce that IBT and SCC will organize a Software Carpentry workshop at KIT on March 19-20, 2024 from 9 am to 5 pm.

What is a Software Carpentry Workshop? A growing number of researchers spend more and more time building and using software, but few have ever been taught how to do this efficiently. In many cases they end up spending more time than necessary to create results whose reliability and reproducibility is unknown. The aim of Software Carpentry is to teach researchers the fundamental skills that will help them be more productive while producing work of higher quality. We do that by teaching workshops where students learn how to automate tasks using the Unix shell, how to track and share work using version control, and how to write software in Python, R, or MATLAB that is readable, reusable, and reliable. During a workshop, short tutorials alternate with practical exercises, and all instruction is done via live coding (i.e. learners write their code along with the instructors).

The lessons taught in our workshop will be the following: • automating tasks using the Unix shell • version control using Git • introduction to programming with Python

Please note that this workshop aims at beginners and that no prior knowledge on the topics are needed to attend the course.

The workshop has not been advertised outside of the IBT for now, and the number of people who can attend is limited. As a consequence, I invite you to have a look at the workshop website (https://mmesiti.github.io/2024-03-19-kit/) and to register if you want to participate to this workshop. This workshop can be particularly interesting for students who will be at IBT in the next months, so I encourage to forward the invitation to them.

Please get in touch with me if you have further questions. Best, Marie

MarieHouillon commented 5 months ago

Should we also open the registration?

mmesiti commented 5 months ago

I opened the registrations

mmesiti commented 5 months ago

perhaps it could make sense to add the link to the registration form in the email?

I'll edit it above.

@mmesiti , will you take care of the RSE@KIT mailling list?

mmesiti commented 5 months ago

(Added request to forward to junior members of research teams to the non-IBT version)

MarieHouillon commented 4 months ago

I've also registered the workshop on the Carpentries website, I had forgotten before sorry

mmesiti commented 4 months ago

I will advertise on the HPC-DIC interests lists today (we should definitely get someone from those lists!)

mmesiti commented 4 months ago

Sorry - I still have not done that, but I will do it today

MarieHouillon commented 4 months ago

We're now full :)

Let's send the first round of reminders tomorrow.

Let's send the first round of reminders tomorrow.

I would send a reminder to all completed registration on Monday. I guess we will not have to run a second round of advertisement.

First reminder sent now.
