HTC Hero cell phone from sprint, tethering capabilities now being denied by Sprint #376

Which device (manufacturer, type)? HTC Hero

Which firmware is installed? unknown

What version of wireless tether are you using? The one that came in the box,
not sure, just got it this past month May 2010 (Radio Shack is the dealer)

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Hook tether up to the vista laptop
2. You can access some sites (standard sufing) but sites like Yahoo email
(accessing your email by entering via a username and password) and Craig's List
(if you are trying to post ads by entering your Craig's List account) are now
denied using "Easy Tether Lite"
3. You can still surf the net, but these secure sites are not viewable when you
use Easy Tether. Worked for the past month, but not anymore.

I called Sprint. They said they are "cracking down" on tethering because they
are not selling that service in their packages. They said if we want to be
their wireless card we can do that. STill, their vendors are selling Sprint
cell phone contracts with the HTC Hero by bragging about the tethering
capability. The tethering capability means you don't need a land line to access
the internet and you don't need the wireless card services, etc. The HTC Hero
makes your internet capability mobile.

So, these application makers (like Easy Tether Lite) make the Hero phone quite
the cool device.

BUT, Sprint apparently is selling contracts using this lure while publicly (on
the phone---call and ask them yourself) denying that their HTC Hero phone is
capable of tethering to access the internet. I spent 2 hours on the phone
trying to find someone who could explain why I cannot get into some secure
sites like Yahoo email.

What is the expected output? I have the feeling that Sprint will try to cut the
cord on Easy Tethering with this phone and try to charge all of us tens of
thousands of folks for our internet service.

Email me if you have the same problem (enviroguy2222@yahoo.com) My friend has
an ATT similar phone and she can tether too and she said it is part of their
service.

Here is the website where it tells you how to tether your HTC Hero and get
internet access virtually instantly: From

If anyone has similar issues, email me.

The issue with https sites is due to EasyTether not allowing you to access
secure http sites after a trial period with their program (PDAnet, another
popular tethering app and pc client schema, does this as well). After their
trial period is over, they simply disable access to https sites, see?
Shouldn't have anything to do with Sprint :)

You can use the app hosted here (android-wifi-tether) to access any of these
sites just fine
