Tethering causes network connection to become sporadic and drop #624

Which device (manufacturer, type)?

motorola droid x

Which firmware is installed?

2.2 stock

What version of wireless tether are you using?

2.0.2

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. establish wifi tether to laptop
2. use laptop to access internet
3. after a few minutes, and faster with higher usage, the 3G network dies

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?

no data transfer - 3G icon goes away at times.

Please provide any additional information below.

The app works great, and the connection to the phone isn't problematic, but for
some reason the connection to verizon dies. The 3G symbol will at time
dissapear. If I go to the browser on the phone and try accessing a web page,
it will occasionaly work - and the connection to the laptop will be restored -
but only temporarily then it will go down again. Other times, accessing the
phone's web browser says "no internet connection" -- which corresponds with the
3G symbol missing.

I'm trying to simulate high load while not tethered by downloading some large
files with wget, but the version of busybox i have seems to be broken. Will do
more testing.

Exact same issue here. I've tested by downloading large files directly on the
phone, and no issue. But as soon as I put any kind of load on the tethering the
3G connection drops.

Try version 2.0.7 ...
http://android-wifi-tether.googlecode.com/files/wireless_tether_2_0_7.apk

This should help if your carrier is vzw.

2.0.7 has been very reliable with my Droid X on Verizon so far. 2.0.6 used to
drop 3G data after awhile. Here's hoping 2.0.7 remains stable.

I have the exact same problem here. I keep thinking that this is a side-effect
of how Verizon does accounting for tethering - the 3G connection re-connects
with different credentials when tethering is enabled. When the phone itself
wants data, 3G disconnects, reconnects with phone credentials, then continues.
Leads to 3G on/off/on/off.

Not sure what causes the "thrash", but there's gotta be a way to fix this.

I have the problem on my DX2 and my D3, even with very recent WifiTether builds.
