Data cuts out constantly when using wifi-tether... #788

Open GoogleCodeExporter opened 9 years ago

GoogleCodeExporter commented 9 years ago
Which device (manufacturer, type)? Droid Incredible

Which firmware is installed? Unrevoked rooted the latest OTA 2.2 pushed out a
few weeks ago...

What version of wireless tether are you using? 2.0.5 RC2

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Simple: Use Wifi-tether with factory default settings.
2.
3.

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?

I expect that my laptop should continue to use data un-interrupted on the
phone. However, after a short time (usually within the first 3 - 5 minutes of
use (or 5mb of data use) I lose my internet connection on my tethered laptop.
Especially when downloading large files. Then, on my phone, I will notice that
the "3G" symbol will disappear for a few seconds... only to reappear. This
obviously means I am losing my data connection. I have tried any combination
of channels, to using security, not using security... nothing matters. The
only way that I can positively impact the problem is if I power off the phone
and reboot it. If I immeadiately start using wifi-tether, I see much better
results. Sometimes it will allow me to use it for almost 20 minutes and use
much more data (have occasionally cracked 100mb)... however, inevitably, it
will fail again. At the worst possible time.

Please provide any additional information below.

A few other things iv'e noticed in testing:

-If i'm just simply web browsing, its not as big a deal: Iv'e gotten so good
at predicting when its going to fail that I can wait for the data on the phone
to stop and once it comes back I just need to refresh the web page on the
browser and usually, it will keep on going (for a few more minutes). This
doesn't help me when downloading large files or connecting to software that
requires a constant data connection.

- Environment doesn't matter: Iv'e tried using it at home... at work... on the
road. It doesn't make a bit of difference.

- Apps running on the phone and / or Apps using data: Iv'e tried many
combinations of disabling all widgets, shutting off sync on as many things as I
can... none of which makes a difference. I thought at first something on my
phone was interfering. This does not seem to be the case.

-I don't believe its my data connection on the phone: I've never noticed in A
LOT of use, that the data stops working in any other scenario than when I am
using wifi-tether. It seems to only happen with this application.

-This is the second phone iv'e had the problem with: My original DInc died a
month ago... it also had this exact same problem.

If there is anything else I can do to help, please let me know. I'm excited to
have this as a working feature on my phone!

Thanks!

Could you please provide "adb logcat" and dmesg output?

Here is a howto for "adb logcat":

https://sites.google.com/site/androidhowto/how-to-1/save-logcat-to-a-text-file

Howto for dmesg (commands using adb):

adb shell
su
dmesg > /sdcard/dmesg.txt

This will generate a file named "dmesg.txt" on your sd-card.

Please upload both files here.

Thanks.

It appears as though latest version 2.0.5 (from today)is much better... I did
not reboot my phone after installing and i'm at 161MB downloaded over the last
hour or so without a single failure. Not sure I ever gotten this much use
before a failure. I will keep you posted... Let me know if you'd like me to
try anything else! Thanks for the quick response!

Well, that was short lived... I used it yesterday quite a bit with no issue.
Today it is back to disconnecting. Would you like another log file?

Even with the new experimental versions it has not improved. Any idea if this
is something that can be fixed?

See my comment #1 ... I need the logs.

I emailed the log to (android-wifi-tether@googlecode.com)... Does it literally
need to be "pasted" in this forum when you say "Please upload both files here?"
Don't these logs contain (somewhat) personal information? That's why I did
not... Please advise.

Also, (as I included in the email), I get "permission denied" errors when
trying to run either of those commands you reference above. What I gave to you
was Xtralogic's log collector which contains (2) failures. Will this be
adequate?

Thanks!

Here is the log requested... I just captured a new one that doesn't contain any
personal information. Let me know if you need anything else.

Thanks!

I see a lot of mentions of "wrong apn" in your log. Up until now, I had never
known what APN was, upon lookup, I discovered that it is "Access Point Name".
You should be able to change APNs in the wireless settings -> mobile networks,
but some ROMs prevent it. Using APN Manager (found in Market), I discovered
that my APN was simply "internet". Further research revealed that the Verizon
APN is supposed to be ##########.vz3g.com where the #'s are your 10 digit phone
number. I have switched to this APN and will let you know if I get any better
stability, I also have those "wrong apn" errors in my log.

I'm not certain the information I found was correct as vz3g.com goes absolutely
nowhere, so I'm not entirely comfortable using that.

harald.mue, I found this information regarding APN:
http://community.vzw.com/t5/BlackBerry-Devices/What-are-the-APN-values-for-Black
berry-9630-Tour/m-p/318504
Apparently this guy with his Blackberry app told it to use TCP/IP as opposed to
APN, perhaps that could fix our Verizon issue? I've seen people with Droid X,
Droid 2, and Incredible all with this same issue of 3G dropping out on Wifi
tether. What's funny is that it happens with the 3G Mobile Hotspot app as well.

harrymonahan3: Changing the APN to #.vz3g.com didn't fix it. It seemed to
work, got almost 50MB through and it started crapping out again. I just
started looking some more and found a mentioning of #.vzw3g.com and that domain
is actually owned by Verizon. I think the other info may have been a typo.

Sorry for posting so many times, using vzw3g doesn't work either, I've also
found mentionings of using "emgsm.vzw3g.com" and that didn't work at all
either. There must be something else going on aside from this "wrong APN" error.

(Sorry about extra post/delete, posted from wrong Google account)

I did not realize that this also happens with the 3G Mobile hotspot app as
well! I'm glad I didn't bite the bullet and pay for it. Do you know if it
happens to un-rooted phones that use the built in 3G Mobile hotspot as well?
I'm starting to wonder if somehow (as you mentioned above) that some ROM's
don't allow APN changing. I wonder if this is a "rooted" phone issue.

As far as I know, the same thing happens with unrooted phones using PDAnet and
3G Mobile Hotspot. There are quite a few mentions on the Verizon and Motorola
forums.
