Warn about ad blockers #4

Open tgr opened 3 years ago

tgr commented 3 years ago

With uBlock Origin and a standard set of filters, most of the functionality of the tool is broken, presumably because the metrics segment in the AQS URL triggers some blocking rule. Not really the tool's fault, but the error message that gets shown in the place of the affected charts ("An error occurred while fetching data for the current title. Try another one.") could warn users to turn off their ad blockers.

Is the tool currently working for you? I get the mentioned error message even after turning off the ad blocker.

tgr commented 3 years ago

It works fine for me with adblock disabled.

I first tried several different pages and all reported the same error message. Then I read this and disabled my ad blocker – but the current (last) example still showed the same error message. I now checked again, and other pages work fine now! Only this one page still brings the same error. Would be good if the error message could be dependent on what broke.

I got this error message for some sites and not for others. I suspect that it is generated when less visited Wikipedia sites are entered. This was the case with Firefox and Microsoft edge. Indeed when I activated uBlock Origin in Firefox even those popular Wikipedia sites that worked before no longer did.

The reporting of an unspecified error is very confusing, it should try to get the error message to the user. Even if the error message is arcane and won't do much to help the casual user, it'll help the less casual user, it's going to be something they can search for online, etc.

AQS returns a HTTP 400 when the page has zero views, so that might be the cause.
