Album unknown shown for a track where the album is known #498

Open GoogleCodeExporter opened 9 years ago

GoogleCodeExporter commented 9 years ago
What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Play certain mp3 in Music Player
2. Switch to Mobbler and look at the album name, "Album unknown" is shown
even though the Music Player knows what album it is in.
3.

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?

Correct album name shown

Please use labels and text to provide additional information.

I've only noticed this happen on an album I ripped from CD using Nokia
Music on the PC. The tracks were also transferred to the phone using Nokia
Music.

This may be one of the quirks of Nokia Music in the way it writes ID3 or
other meta data. e.g.

I did notice that album art isn't embedded in the mp3 file nor stored in
the directory containing the tracks meaning that the image shows up in the
music player when the track is playing but Mobbler does not show the image.

We take the title and artist from the
music player observer, and try and
find them from the Content Listing
Framework, and if they do, we grab
the album name, and the path too,
and we use the path to try and get
the album art (embedded in the file
or in the folder).

I suspect you're right, the ID3 isn't
quite right.

I've just examined the mp3 files and the ID3 tags look right. Nokia Music is
encoding
the tags as ID3v2.3.0 and the album title is correctly in an TALB frame. In
fact, the
album art is in there too. So there must be something wrong with the 3rd party
APIs
that read the ID3 since the music player is reading them correctly.

Yeah, both Eartle and I have seen
albums with proper tags where the
CLF just doesn't find it for some
reason.

I've just noticed that the 5th edition extension API plugin is out now and
includes
the Audio MetaData reader API, I wonder if these issues are fixed in there?

Nokia N97 here, latest (pre 2.0) firmware. Latest Mobbler Beta (0.70). Issue
persists, tried several tracks, same. Album unknown. Tracks had ID3 tracks
written by
a variety of programs including MP3Tag. I don't use Nokia Music.

Same problem on Mobbler Beta @ Nokia 5800. Listing some of "unknown albums"
down
here:

John Dahlbäck - Winners & Fools
Lindstrøm - Where You Go I Go Too
WWW - Tanec Sekyr
Chinaski - Na Na Na A Jiné Popjevky
Sigur Rós - Ágætis Byrjun

I was trying to find some coherence between "unknown albums" but I didn't get
any
idea. I thought It might happen for albums which are not listed in album
section of
artists at Last.fm. But for example Ágætis Byrjun is listed (and of course
well
known). On the other hand for example A Raver's Diary by artist Dusty Kid is
not
listed in his album overview, but Mobbler recognizes it well. Also It's not
matter of
some difficult letters such "æ" or "ø". Tanec Sekyr by WWW contains only
basic
letters and Mobbler doesn't know it. It's quite frustrating because trouble
with
album stats scrobbling was the issue for what I left Vodafone Scrobbler and
went
testing Mobbler. And It seems I changed albums-ignoring scrobbler for
every-second-
album-ignoring one. It's pity. Rest of app is OK. But creating proper stats is
essential. At least I think so.

Original comment by jaroslav...@gmail.com on 20 Oct 2009 at 1:48

GoogleCodeExporter commented 9 years ago
I agree stats are an important part of Last.fm.

Not knowing the album name would happen everytime with titles containing
"difficult", non-ASCII characters: diacritics, umlauts, accented characters
like ó ö
ä, etc. This has been fixed yesterday in issue 526. It'll be in the next
release.

Not knowing the album name happens only sometimes, and is still open. The API
Mobbler uses to be notified of the now playing track does not give the album,
just
title and artist. So we use another API called the Content Listing Framework to
try
and match the artist/title in there, and get the album from there. The
non-ASCII
characters bug was because we'd for example be comparing "Sigur Rós" with
"Sigur
Rós" and it wouldn't match. That's now fixed. But sometimes the CLF just
doesn't
have a listing even though the mp3 might have proper ID3 tags. For me, this
only
happens with two albums out of over 700 mp3s on my phone.

GoogleCodeExporter commented 9 years ago
Personally, I seldom take a look at the album statistics. The important ones
for me
(and I think for most people) are the track and artist ones, which are used by
last.fm to suggest new music to my profile.

So not having the album name properly scrobbled is not a big deal for me, and
suspect
this is the most common situation.

hugovk: Thanks for explanation. Now It's obvious why Vodafone Scrobbler
completely
ignores the albums. I expected something like Mobbler API does not give the
album and
Mobbler solves this problem in some other way. I checked all the albums I have
now
loaded in and "unknown" status have 11 of 44. So It's not every-second :)
However
still a lot. All in all I definitely appriciate effort made by each person
standing
behind this app and hope in future progress :)

tonilounavarro: I wouldn't dare to think what most people think, but fact is
that
library displaying track played 30 times when overall is played 40 times is ..
well
just a mess with no sense. But only If you matter :) So you are lucky one.

Original comment by jaroslav...@gmail.com on 20 Oct 2009 at 4:08

GoogleCodeExporter commented 9 years ago
I agree it would be nice to get this fixed, but the played track counter on
last.fm
is not messed up by the lack of the album. If I play a track 40 times on
Mobbler it
shows 40 plays on last.fm, although Mobbler does not send the album for some
reason.

That's why I think it is not so harmful, that's it.

jaroslav.smola: we've just released Mobbler 0.07(6187) with issue 526 fixed (no

Just checked the mp3 files which were being shown as (Album unknown). All of
them had
empty ID3v2 tags.

I fixed ID3v2 tags (populated from corresponding v1 tags) in all these files.
When I
played these edited files, correct album name was shown in Mobbler.

Maybe S60 player reads ID3v1 tags to build its library and Content Listing
Framework
used ID3v2.

hugovk: Am I able to download 6187? When I click on link for latest beta
version, I
still get 6182. I would like to test If Mobbler will be able to recognizace for
instance Ágætis Byrjun .. at least :)

tonilounavarro: Sorry, I explained the issue with wrong words :) Of course 40
times
played track will be still 40 times played, but when you will enter library and
check
the album including this track, it will have 30 plays (if the track was
scrobbled 10
times without album info). That's the problem for those who care about their
libraries :)

Anyway, I think mobbler is working like this from day zero, even on S60 3d
Edition.
The Nokia API has never been able to get the album name, so I assume mobbler has
always fetched the album name in the same "try-to-find-it" way.

That's why I think this is not so bad, even if I care about my music library :-)

hugovk: So lame I didn't find it :) Fix worked for 4 of 11 unknown albums.
Interesting
that one of recognized doesn't contain any special char (WWW - Tanec Sekyr).
Other two
albums were from Dahlbäck and the last, of course, from Sigur Rós :) Still it
is
interesting that Mobbler for instance doesn't recognize such mainstream title
as
MSTRKRFT - Fist Of God. But fix definitely helped *thumbs up*

Just noting, issue with MP3 persists on 0.9 on 5800.

But also, it appears to have worsened. When playing tracks with non-ASCII
artist
fields, album is undetected even for MP4 files (this hadn't happened to me
before).
Even some files that used to be detected correctly now aren't.

Would it be possible to clearly state somewhere in the project wiki exactly
which tag format &
version Mobbler can read... Mobbler isn't reading any album info or images from
the track tags
on my microSD card (tags are v2.3 and edited using mp3tag v.2.46a.)

Probable cause: PEBKAC!

Hi jkforde,

Is your phone's built-in music player able to read the album info. and images?
Also
which phone do you have?

Mobbler doesn't read the album art itself from a file but instead uses a Nokia
provided API and uses the result. If that does not find an image then it will
query
Last.fm for an appropriate image to display instead if the user has allowed it
to in
the program settings.

Hi gw111zz,

Thanks for fast reply. I use a Nokia E51 (300.34.56) and yes, the music player
displays the
album art; the player doesn't display any album info in it's display but if I
view the track
details from within the player the album info is there.

So you're saying that there'd be no point in trying to convert the existing
tags to ID3v1 to
see if Mobbler would read them?

Thanks again.

Hi jkforde,

> So you're saying that there'd be no point in trying to convert the existing

> ID3v1 to see if Mobbler would read them?

The fact that the music player isn't displaying album info. but it is displayed
track
details suggests that it is a bug in the OS.

So yes, it is worth a try converting the tags to ID3 V1 to see if that works.
Let us
know how it goes.

Sorry gw111zz, what I meant is that the music player on the E51 is not designed
to display any
album info, only track artist and name; I was only pointing out that the album
info is indeed in
the tag as confirmed in the View Details. So there's nothing wrong with the app
or OS

Ah ha! using mp3tag, I removed all tags other than ID3v.1 and now Mobbler is
reading the album info (except longer tag info which has been truncated you
can't win them all!). Hope this helps other E51 \ S60 3ed users.

I've tried playing mp3 files with id3v1 and id3v2.4 tags on both beta 0.10(80)
and stable 1.09(265) versions of Mobbler and found out that Mobbler only
displays album data correctly for files with id3v1 tags. The problem is, if you
want to listen to music files containing some non-Latin characters you HAVE to
correct tags to id3v2.4 UTF-8 format, otherwise they just won't display
correctly. So it seems like we have quite a dilemma here :)

I'm running the software version 30.0.009 (31-05-10) on Nokia 5530.

examined tags from both recognized and unrecognized tracks, but I couldn't find
any difference.
I attached file with album tag that is recognized by mobbler. Don't worry about
