I often play wide screen movies in a small window while working. I hope you can 
provide a way to 
crop the movie via the menu bar or through the 'c' key just like VLC.

Also, a way to expand the window from the lower left corner (not very Mac-like, 
I know), but useful 
for upper-right-side small window viewers like me.

If I understand it correctly, your first issue is already resolved. Go to:
Movies > Full Screen Filling > Crop

You can also set this as a default behaviour in the Movist Preferences:
Video > Wide Screen Movie Filling: Crop
