Make google maps map layer avalable as an option instead of the satelite layer #55

Open GoogleCodeExporter opened 9 years ago

GoogleCodeExporter commented 9 years ago
It'd be great if the map tiles from google maps were useable in the google
earth plugin. This would let devs show a lot more placemarks than is currently
feasable using the maps api as the GE plugin is a lot faster.

It would be great to see this work. Sometimes, the terrain layer makes for much
easier comprehension of
complex raster data displays. The satellite layer is very "busy".

I believe this is superb functionality to add to Google Earth Plugin. The
ability to
able to switch from satellite to street map is something I really desire for
the same
reason underbluewaters has mentioned.

I would petition for such a capability. I think this will really rock! I would
like
to encourage the Google Earth Plugin developers to really make this a
possibility in
the near future :)

Recently, my company went to a trade show and presented to our upcoming product
which
uses Google Earth plugin. The first thing that most people asked was, "Can you
just
see the streets?" The street map instead of terrain or satellite is more
appealing
to the industries that we serve because our clients often want to print off the
map.
The streets make a better background than the terrain especially when displaying
transparent layers. As such, I would highly recommend the developer to
consider and
make this ability a reality in the very near future. You may contact me
regarding our
survey.

This is really a must have as the GE plugin is much faster than GMaps but
doesn't
provide the streets view that GMaps users love.

I just wanted to note that Microsoft's Bing Maps 3D (a Google Earth competitor),
already has this capability. As such, this proves that the functionality is
useful
and it is one of the few areas in which Google actually trails Microsoft.

grzegorz.suchy: A word of friendly advice, after getting a couple of emails for
you
adding a "me too" comment. All you have to do is star the issue to indicate
that you
also want an answer. The "me too" comments don't really help move things along
and
can clutter up the comments (especially on issues with more comments), making it
harder to find the ones that are actually addressing the issue. Plus when you
do a
"me too" comment, it emails out to everyone who has commented on the bug. As
will
this comment but I hoped it could help us all out if you knew this. :)

This functionality is already present in the standalone version using overlays:
http://www.gelib.com/google-maps.htm
It would be nice to see in the web version as well (perhaps it's already
possible?)

Maybe this issue could be more generalized to include other layers also, not
just streetmaps, such as terrain maps. 45deg angle imagery as well for when the
camera is tilted 45deg. (you shouldn't be able to see a small object behind a
high wall when tilted, for example.)
