The default "align" attribute on a vbox layout is left, meaning the components (your two panels in this case) are aligned to the left side of the parent container. Because they have no real content (the title doesn't count as content), their width is 0 and you dont see them. If you set align on the layout to stretch, it stretches the child panels to the full width of the parent container
