I have a mattermost setup on my local server. If there is an interest, I can install it on a public server for our use.

It's quite easy to set a chat room up with Matrix.org. Browser, mobile, desktop are all supported if that is of interest. From there bridges to other chat systems (IRC, Discord, ..) are also possible, if that is wanted,
