Setup Does NOT Complete Successfully #5280

Closed modxbot closed 10 years ago

GuardianX created Redmine issue ID 5280

I just installed Revolution 2.1.2 and it went through the steps, db setup successful and so on and gave me the successful page and when you click next it goes to ?complete but its a blank white page with nothing there. Nothing to load, nowhere to go and the main page is blank, nothing is completed and the setup is basically orphaned and never completes creating an unusable installation. Then it finally expires and says that it needs to restart because it has been more than 15 minutes and if you try to go through the process again it fails immediately and gives all kinds of errors. I had to delete the directory, reload the files from scratch and try again and same thing happens, so what gives? Why is the setup failing like this? Why doesn't it actually say why? It shows everything is successful up to that point until it just DIES.

You'll have to provide more details of your setup — also check http://rtfm.modx.com/display/revolution20/Troubleshooting+Installation

I see the status on this has been changed from bug to feedback, which is not the case. This is an obvious bug where the setup does not properly conclude. Its also not a minor issue but actually blocker since it makes the installation unusable as it never finishes, therefore effectively stopping you from using it. So I don't believe that its in the best interest of this issue to mark it as feedback and minor.

Also, you say provide more information about details of my setup but didn't ask anything in specific. I provided all that was obvious and a factor, so if you need something more specific, you need to ask for it. I can't guess what you mean with the standard statement of "provide more details".

I looked at the troubleshooting link you provided, already had before too, and I don't find anything there that answers my issue. The blank page one seemed promising but it talks about having modified the config template and file, I did no such thing. I uploaded the package as provided on the download and uploaded it and ran the setup, nothing was modified or changed, or replaced. So I don't see how that applies to me.

Check your core/cache/logs/ and see if there is any information there. Also check the web server log. Lastly, see if an error_log has been created in the root of the site

What web server? What OS? What database?

I understand your frustration, but simply saying, "its broke" surrounded by attitude isn't helping anything.

According to this: [[http://bugs.modx.com/issues/5136]]

You also need to see if the disk is full.

First off, I didn't just say its broke with attitude, I explained in detail what happened. Not looking at the log and giving attitude is not helping either since everything you just asked is listed under environment, LINUX, PHP 5/6 and mySQL 5, how does that not answer your question? How does that just say its broke? and how is getting upset with the brush off considered attitude? You might want to check yourself first before throwing stone.

We have unlimited space, not an issue. We have 4 GB of RAM on the server and a minimum of 128 MB are available to each application we install. We run wordpress, just fine. We run joomla, just fine. We run phpBB just fine. I can go on, but you get the picture. No memory issue, no shortage of space and as I said in my initial post, it goes through the DB setup and installation and comes back and gives ZERO error, shows EVERYTHING is successfully completed and yet just goes to an empty page at the end on =complete and sits there with nothing further. It won't load the next step, the installation is not active as it won't load the front/back ends.

That's all the logs, so how is that for cooperation? I didn't want to flood everything with logs like this but since you asked, there they are. And before you say it, yes I noticed all the duplicate notices for the database, but the fact is that this db is a fresh install, never been used for anything else, especially not modx and has been verified to actually have nothing other than what was recently placed in there by this modx installation. I actually deleted the db, as well as the entire installation and tried again, just to cover that base, and nothing changed.

Looks as if you tried to reinstall MODX over a preexisting database.

Dump the tables in the database.

Also, make sure you have the correct permissions on the individual directories, which are coming back as errors. I run suphpexec, which will fail anything in a 777 directory. They have to be 755.

Try deleting it all and starting over - not just rerunning setup. Most of your errors seem to be collision based.

If there is a bug here at all, it should report if any of the install functions failed.

I still do not know what web server software or os you are using: though my guess is some form of Linux.

Please refer to what I said at the end, there is no pre-existing copy, its a fresh database, so nothing to dump. The permissions are correct, they were set during the installation and also by default permissions for these installs are set to 755 on our server but I verified them just because you asked and they are correct. The permissions being correct and writable was also verified by the setup and it came back valid. As I said before, not sure why you are not reading it and just repeating what I have already said, IT HAS BEEN DELETED AND STARTED OVER and nothing changed. Because I saw the same things you see in the log and my instinct was the same, even though there was no previous installs of modx and the db was fresh, I did it anyway. I also don't know how you can say you still don't know what OS I am using when I have repeated it 3 times for you, do you actually read anything or just like to say something to see it in print? Read the environment information, and also what I have responded twice, and for the last time, I AM RUNNING LINUX, you want to know which particular distribution, fine, its Red Hat on this server, while we run FreeBSD on the other and Debian on the mobile systems. Anything else? Version numbers perhaps? Build numbers? FTP sites? Come on, give me a break, I am not some dumb ass novice, I have been doing networking, security, intrusion detection, linux admin, coding for over 20+ years and I am a professional who knows probably more than you from what I am seeing right now, so when I come to ask for help, then I have tried all the usual crap already or I wouldn't waste my time getting the debug 101 treatment. Now you can say I have attitude because getting jerked around is not my idea of support.

Yes it does. It has full admin rights and our configuration has unique and independent databases for each instance of our need for mySQL because we don't like to store data for multiple applications inside one DB, so we segregate. This way we can have as may as we want, and don't have to worry about any conflict or overlap.

I use nothing but Redhat servers and typically have absolutely no problem with Revo on them.

From your previous remark, my almost three decades of experience and 9 degrees in computers and internet technologies are obviously insufficient to help this situation.

I will not be checking this thread any longer.

In case you're wondering PHP 6 was killed and "Linux" is not an OS but a platform.

Which distribution of Linux you use is irrelevant for the most part unless its missing core functions which it is not. Doesn't matter what type of linux you run as long as its not a minimalist or gutted version. As for the PHP, its primarily 5, has php.ini backward compatibility with 4.x and also has the most recent implementation of 6.x using the same. That's why I put 5/6, although I should have put 3/4/5/6 but no matter, you seem intent on making a mountain out of a mole hill anyway. Focusing on the stuff that doesn't matter rather the issue before us. Nothing but noise.

You don't act like you have 3 decades of experience and 9 degrees and as you keep going in circles and asking irrelevant questions that have been answered repeatedly. I have 2 degrees in computing, 2 masters in networking, security and programming and a doctorate in artificial intelligence and work with the IBM watson project, as well as working for the DOD and NSA, so don't condescend or insult me. I also have over 18 different certifications for CISCO, MS, etc. Having a piece of paper with little to back it up, means nothing.

I am aware that Linux is a platform but its also an OS, yes it is. Look it up. Various distributions of Linux are based on the Unix kernel and are just variations of open source configurations people prefer and does not alter or change greatly the underlying function, capability and compatibility of it. So the term LINUX is generally and widely valid and acceptable. Whether you have Server 2003, NT, or 7, its still called Windows. That's the operating system, as well as the platform. So don't think you can try to make me look bad by saying something irrelevant and asinine. I would challenge you to point out differences in Red Hat, FreeBSD (or any incarnation of it), Debian (or any incarnation of it) that would negate them being called LINUX as a general term and affect their ability to be compatible with this software? You can't, their kernel is practically identical and the peripheral changes, adaptations, extensions are often irrelevant on server functionality unless you are using them as "desktop" GUI implementations, which mostly run KDE or Gnome anyway, so not much difference there either.

I don't mind you stopping responding since you have offered no real solution and pretty much argued with me, insulted me and made this into a battle of wills and a fight rather than what it was intended to be, and that is a genuine support issue. Figures that the person who changes the status of this is named Coward and you are the best they can offer on followup. Not boasting well for this product if you are the best they got to offer.

GµårÐïåñ x, please refrain from inappropriate language, cease insulting members of the core team, and note that we only support stable releases of PHP. A failure to do so will result in a ban.

Remember also that you are getting this product for free, so respect for the years of volunteer work done to get MODX where it is is preferred. Also note that hundreds of thousands of installations of MODX have occurred without the problems you are describing, on environments similar to yours, leading us to believe this is a server environment and/or configuration on your part, rather than an issue with MODX.

If you could try to respond with more grace, perhaps you will find more grace in return.

As for your problem, I was unable to replicate. My guess is that you need to check your file permissions, or your PHP configuration. Do you have suhosin installed? Are you running FastCGI? Are you using APC or a similar accelerator? Are you using safe_mode, or mod_security? These kinds of details would help us further look into your situation.

wshawn, while I understand the frustration, there's no need to throw in years of experience here. ;) As shown, sometimes that does not matter.

With all due respect, I stated the problem, didn't get personal or offensive until that was done to me and I responded in kind. You threatening me or taking a narrow view of the obvious isn't going to change the facts. I don't know what unstable version of PHP you are speaking of but the last time I checked PHP 5 is stable and commonly used and that's what we use. We have the ability to use older or newer using PHP.ini but we don't, we have no need to.

Product maybe free but that doesn't excuse poor support or attitude about it because you expect to be supported through donations, in order to get that you have to provide something worth supporting. So that argument is vain and a cop out. It is people like myself who take time to use the product and report problems with it that make it better. If your argument is that we provide whatever, as-is and we don't care so don't complain, then that's not really inspired or boasting well for the reputation of the software. Linux is free and open source too, would you argue that if you don't like something, don't fix it, don't report it, just move to another platform? Your argument makes no sense and I think you know and I suspect you just say that as a way to shame someone into backing down and having dealt with open source software and been a contributor to it all my career, I would say that your position on this is wrong. Read my submission, I did it with grace, respect and kept it strictly professional. I didn't behave dismissive, rude or offensive, that was something that was given to me in response and I responded in kind, I won't apologize for that. Grace in response is earned, you can't demand it and if you don't respond in kind, you can't expect it.

Back to the topic and your questions. The permissions are correct, they have been verified before, during and after. The php configuration is correct and the info dump shows everything is there and configured correctly as would be expected for this process. We don't have suhosin installed. We are running PHP Version 5.2.17 and not using FastCGI, our server API is simply CGI. We are not using APC or any other accelerators. We are not using safe mode ('--enable-safe-mode=no') and we don't have the mod_security either. I have never minded providing information if asked and if you can see, anytime asked, I have provided in full. In fact if you wish to see the entire php_info dump, I would be happy to provide it for you, minus some redaction of course, but I won't post it unless you ask because as you know its huge and very long and very involved and not parts of are necessary for debugging. If you have a specific block or range of information you wish to have dumped, I would be happy to give you that.

I noticed that your last response was a dig and didn't show grace as you suggested, but I will take the higher road and refrain from answering it. My years of experience have nothing to do with whether or not an application will perform as expected and have done everything within that range of experience to debug it but also acknowledged as a professional that at some point, you have to ask the people who made it to reflect on their software and help in the debugging process. After all, who knows more about it than them right? I don't think asking for input and feedback on anything is a negative reflection on a person's knowledge and ability and to imply otherwise is frankly lacking grace in itself.

I appreciate that clarification but I already knew that. The reason I posted here is because I found the forum no help on this issue and any topics discussed missed the mark enough that it was not worth bumping or digging further into them in that forum. I made a judgement call that a failed installer would be more of a bug than a support issue per se and figured this was the most appropriate forum to ask. Obviously the lack of civility and focus on personal attacks than the issue presented has proven me wrong in this matter. I guess sometimes the average person in the forum might be more willing to get off their high horse and provide information that is useful than someone who is expected to be a more knowledgeable professional whose ego seems to get in the way instead. I am still hopeful that this can be resolved here but if we go nowhere on this, then I might as well cut my loss and move on to a solution that is more stable and at least installs out of the gate. I have tried many solutions before I landed on trying this one, never had an issue on anyone of them other than didn't like their structures for certain purposes. I read up on this and found its claims to be promising and decided to give it a shot and see if as a developer I can find a better home with it, but so far if I can't even get it to install correctly, its hard to evaluate anything else it has to provide, hence my frustration.

I'd love to have a phone conversation with you about your issue and to see if we can help figure out what's going on. Please contact me directly at ryan@modx.com if you'd like to get started. We will need to be able to access your servers in order to help figure this out. Thank you.

Thank you for the offer Ryan and I greatly appreciate that. I would love to speak with you and it would be my pleasure to work with you to figure out what is going on. Who knows, we might just find a fringe or edge case that while might not affect the masses, affects enough people to be worth taking into consideration for future releases.

To aid in this matter and to some extent based on what our friend said earlier about having used RH servers without issue and ours being the same, we would expect similar behavior; I have begun installing it on a fresh box we put together over the last couple of days and I am ready to give it a whirl. It was a bit of work to create a box from scratch JUST to test this, but hey I am a code warrior and I love to tinker, so I am game. I could have made a virtual image, but what's the fun in that, right? This server has the same configurations down to the most granular level we could manage, even kept the builds as close to the same branch as to avoid any exceptions or changes to the outcome.

I need till the end of the day to get some time to work on this and keep track of the progress to share with you. I will send you the full report at your email and I will provide you with my information so you can call me, or you can give me yours and I will call you, whichever works for you. If the install works on this system while it didn't on the old one, then I need to do a system snapshot and literary crawl through the differences to see if I can pinpoint what caved. If it fails on this one too, then we have a third consistency on the behavior and that should help us have more than one snapshot to work with to figure out what went bump. Either way, this will will get us a step closer to figuring out what went wrong. Although I am hoping for the contrary, this will also keep me honest and check my work too, to make sure I wasn't the problem ;) I'll keep you posted and what is useful I will post here as well, otherwise, I will write you directly. Thank you.

This was user error, not an actual error caused by Modx.
