Bottom app bar #1270

With more phones these days having larger and taller displays, I was wondering if it would be a good idea to have a bottom app bar in QKSMS. Since a search icon would be at the bottom, there'd be no need to stretch one's thumb or use one's other hand to reach the search bar at the top of the screen. I currently use an Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1 with a 6 in screen, and it's really awkward to tap the search bar with my thumb.

The navigation drawer could become a bottom sheet like in Google Tasks. And when opening a conversation thread, the FAB on the bottom app bar could morph into a send button.

Overall, a bottom app bar would improve single-handed usage, as well as make it easier and more convenient to navigate throughout the app.

I like this quite a bit, I'll experiment with some designs and post back here

For later reference

Quick mockup - any thoughts?

That looks fantastic! Maybe one suggestion: an extended FAB with the + icon and the text "Start conversation," like in Tasks or Gratus.

I really like the seconds mockup. Maybe you can make the notification bar color also white (like in the google Nerws app). Then it will look fantastic on my OnePlus 6 with the notch.

gabkomarnicki commented 5 years ago

I also prefer the second one.

@Jatarii Do you mean the status bar, not the notification bar?

Jatarii commented 5 years ago

Yeah sorry! I mean the status bar.

I frankly don't mind the top navigation, but if I had to choose I guess I would say the second one, but the hamburger and search buttons don't really flow well down there. Is it possible to make bottom navigation an option instead? I know allot of people prefer top navigation. Or maybe just eliminate the hamburger menu overall with something else

I love that! Can you post a full image where we can see the bottom as well? It kind of cuts off

moezbhatti commented 5 years ago

@Jrdnkasparek this one here is a full screenshot! I can't find an exact rule in the MD guidelines but based on the Tasks app that follows MD 2.0, it looks like it scrolls to fill 50% of the screen by default and then you can scroll down to see the rest

Jrdnkasparek commented 5 years ago

@moezbhatti No I mean can you post an image without that menu up so we can see what it looks like. I love that menu look! 👍

moezbhatti commented 5 years ago

@Jrdnkasparek probably something like this -

Jrdnkasparek commented 5 years ago

That looks good too! I liked the lowered one but I assume you adjust the height as you scroll through the drawer

amyers3 commented 5 years ago

All of this looks amazing. The bottom nav bar feels so wrong though, haha!

gabkomarnicki commented 5 years ago

I prefer the font weight of the word "Inbox" in the first two mockups, but with the same alignment as in the newer mockups. But other than that, really nice work!

+1 for the second mockup. Looks great, fresh, and unique. Love it! Would be a great addition for a 4.0 milestone along with a refreshed message options and attachments UI 😉

Is this with material you still relevant?
