MMS lost when missing cell coverage #1915

DESCRIPTION

I have Wi-Fi calling enabled on my phone, so I'm able to send and receive SMS while on Wi-Fi, but that doesn't allow MMS. The problem is that when I'm away from cell coverage for an extended period of time, any MMS that was sent during that period is never received.

STEPS

  1. Make sure Wi-Fi calling is enabled
  2. Disable mobile data or go somewhere with no cell coverage that still has Wi-Fi
  3. Have someone send you a group text
  4. Wait a while (I'm not sure how long. I waited 15 min or less once and did get it, but leaving it for around 8 hours consistently loses the message.)
  5. Enable mobile data and go somewhere with cell data coverage
  6. See that nothing is received

EXPECTED

Ideally, once I'm back with coverage, the message should automatically be downloaded. Also, it might be nice to have a notification that there was a message that wasn't downloaded. If it isn't reasonable to automatically download the message, it would at least be good to have the option to manually download it once I have coverage. I saw a number of other issues regarding lost MMS. I'm not sure if the cause of those are related, but in any of those cases, if there is an indication that a message needs to be downloaded, at least showing that the message wasn't received and having an option to try downloading it again would be more helpful than no indication that a message was missed, so the resolution of this to notify that a message needs to be downloaded and an option to force it to try again may at least help with some of those.

OBSERVATIONS

Nothing visibly happens. The message is silently lost. I didn't realize that I had lost so many messages until I switched back to Google's default Messages app, which showed that I had numerous messages from various contacts that were never downloaded. Apparently, something was successfully received indicating that the message wasn't actually downloaded yet. Google Messages is able to notify me that there is a message to download while on Wi-Fi without a data connection, which I can manually download later.

I'd much rather use QKSMS, but consistently losing messages forced me to switch away.

Hello, I've the same problem and I though it was my SIM card with had an issue. My mobile operator changed it and no way, I don't receive MMS if my mobile datas aye deactivated. If I reactive them, I don't get the MMS, it's lost for ever

@Lukas040 i had the same issue. However your mms is not lost. Going back to another messaging app like lineageos stock one i had the "message not downloaded" in the conversation and i could click to download it again. Then qksms saw it. I think we could get functionality out of lineageos messaging app as it is working there.
