Migrating data to new phone = screwed up contacts #1979

DESCRIPTION

I recently bought a newer phone (pixel 7) and used the built-in android migration tool to copy the data over (which apparently doesn't work very well if at all). The QKSMS contacts are all there, but the names are associated with the wrong numbers so when I get a text from Betty it says it's Alex. Not quite sure how to fix this mess as yet.

STEPS

  1. Use android migration tool to copy data to new phone
  2. no step 2

OK I think I fixed it by importing a contacts.vcf independently which seems to have overwritten the bad data. I'm hoping. Not sure why the Android migration method caused everything to get shuffled.

Dude, qksms is NOT a contact app, therefore it won't mess with your contacts at all - it just uses them.

So it was an Android bug?

More a bug of your contacts app. If you don't use a custom one, it depends on your smartphone manufacturer. Each brand uses its own (Pixel > Google Contacts, Samsung > ?, Huawei> ?, aso.).

So it could have either been an issue with your system, contacts app, backup app and even more. Hard to distinguish, really. Because of dangers like these, I always backup my contacts online and manually.
