Timeout too quick #41

Closed GoogleCodeExporter closed 9 years ago

GoogleCodeExporter commented 9 years ago
What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Open "Sparse RSS"
2. Add Feed
3. Times-out due to inability to find server (slow server, other issues)

I guess my whole thing is, could you add a timeout setting for advaned users?
and perhaps a proxy setting for Orbot users (or otherwise)?

Using current version, Android 2.1 (j_r0dd's version) Moto Backflip.

Much obliged, and would donate if these 2, if not just one, things are
added/fixed.

And believe me, I know Orbot doesn't work on WiFi without a custom ROM.

The timeout is currently set to infinity, however this is the standard setting
which can be different in different android versions.

In revision 86, I set both, read- and connect-timeout, to each 30 seconds which
should be sufficient in any case.

The more difficult thing is the proxy. Android does not support setting the
proxies in general, which is bad and there are several issues with that.
I will add a proxy selection dialog which will be available with the menu-key
in the settings. But only expect a host/ip and a port for http and https.

Much obliged again to you for such a quick reply, and likewise for trying to do
this. I've seen the many comments to the main issue to Google about a WiFi
Proxy, and it is extremely important to many people. Strange that Google hasn't
looked at this issue yet.

As a suggestion, seeing as you're the first to do add a proxy (and believe me,
I looked), I would do as many have done, and create a "lite" and "pro"
versions. I absolutely want to donate to you for all you've done. I'll be
patiently waiting.

As a final note, I realize that those people using Orbot also have a chance to
use a *.onion address. Does SparseRSS use any sort of URL-check? If so, what
would be the possibility of adding *.onion addresses/removing this check?
Thanks again.

There is no kind of url checking except a check for the presence of "http://"
or "https://" which is automatically added if absent.

I will also add an option to use the proxy only on wifi to not override the apn
settings.

Thanks for the offer of a donation, but I am not interested in money. Also,
there will be only one version that contains all features.

Proxy implemented in revision 89. But I could not really test the whole thing.

You may try the attached file that has been created from this revision. (see
preferences for proxy settings)

In revision 90 is a small fix for the above version that used the entered proxy
also on 2g/3g network state, but this should not affect your tests since you
are interested in wifi-proxy-usage.

What would be the possibility of uploading rev90 also? Seeing as I'm constantly
on the move, I'd like both versions. However, seeing as rev90 contains both
fixes in one, that would be the smarter move. Testing rev89 now.

Unfortunately, in testing, neither revision worked. My many thanks to you,
however, for attempting. If you wish to keep this issue open, that is your
choice. I will continue to check from time to time if you do. I will keep the
revisions downloaded and continue testing. If I find a work-around on my end, I
will let you know. Again, thank you.

That was an easy bug.

I could test the proxy with the attached version successfully (created from
revision 91).

You, sir, are a god. As soon as I can get the apk to my phone, testing will
commence. Likewise, since you won't accept a donation, +1000 internets for you.
Thanks again.
