Factor out common code from the painters #10

Currently there is an awful lot of duplicated code, including magic numbers and 
hard-coded colors, 
in the painter classes. Much of this could be factored into some common utility 
classes.

This should be done before the 0.2 release tag.

Colors and shapes are factored out in 0.1.6.
