Modernize for newer Maven versions

• Fix #3 use newer plexus-utils to get bugfix for codehaus-plexus/plexus-utils#14
• Update dependencies and plugins
• Standardize formatting for files and pom.xml files
• Remove trailing whitespace and tabs
• Add missing generic type parameters
• Apply consistent line-ending (dos2unix)

Apologies for the size of the PR... I tried a limited update to fix the bug in #3, but...

• Everything was so out-of-date, getting the updated dependencies made things not compile, so
• then I had to load things up in my IDE, which messed with formatting everything, so
• then I had to go back and try to standardize formatting to reduce the patch size
• I had to address the generics to reduce the warnings noise, so I could see and fix warnings related to fixing the bug.
• The trailing whitespace, tabs, and dos2unix line-endings consistency I did at the end, because they annoyed me.
