[From Kate after convo with Matt] a proposed solution for the upcoming release:

[x] only support single-line SMILES input in the input field
[x] dynamically sort by similarity as the user types in the input field (change from filter to sort)
[x] allow input of other formats via the MarvinJS draw modal. the input field will still show SMILES regardless of the format used via the MarvinJS draw modal once similarity sorting is applied

Blockers // struggles

[x] Is Flagging working in my or Sara's PRs?
[x] Still trying to understand... "input of other formats via the MarvinJS draw modal."
[x] Why is my MarvinJS Draw modal broken?
