Unable to connect to server when registering phone number #200

Is there an existing issue for this?

Bug description

Whenever I try to sign in using my phone number it doesn't work and it pops up an error message saying:

Unable to connect to service. Please check network connection and try again.

This happens whether I try it through the official Signal or Molly-FOSS app.

I've noticed a lot more bugs with the latest release of Molly, including a massive amount of battery drain with degoogled Android.

Steps to reproduce

  1. Install Molly or Signal
  2. Enable permissions
  3. Try to register phone number hitting "Continue"
  4. Pop up with error message appears.

Molly version

v6.23.5.1-FOSS

Android version

Android 13

Device

Google Pixel 6

Link to debug log

No logs available as I can't register and sign in.

Downgrading to the previous version allowed me to get a different error message pop-up which said that I had to wait more than 3 hours in order to be able to try to login again.

Signal's server has really strict rate limits for new registrations, so it's super annoying and can take hours or even days to sign up, especially when you don't have Google Play on your phone or you're using a VPN or Tor.

I agree that error messages can be inconsistent sometimes. It's like that in Signal too.

There's nothing we can do but keep working to have our own Molly infrastructure without these issues.
