Does not notify accounts on joining Signal feature #257

Open ghost opened 9 months ago

Is there an existing request for this?

Feature description

According to Signal itself, notifying contacts when you join Signal doesn't happen on the servers, but via the Signal client itself. This means Molly could make a feature to toggle this off while registering to Signal with Molly.

Why is this importmant?

For many people in different situations, it could be a thread letting people know that you're using Signal, for example individuals who are under surveillance or being stalked by a specific group or person. Since Molly is a hardened version of Signal, I think this feature should be part of it.

This may be mitigated upstream when Signal releases usernames in "early 2024" (allegedly, from this interview, timestamped at 47:30) , which will provide phone number privacy (PNP) and offer the option to prevent contact discovery via phone number - but we'll get to that bridge when we get there.

As the future has shown this has not changed.

Does usernames not mitigate this?

It happens on account creation as soon as you register with your phone number, and as far as I'm aware, everyone who saved your phone number in their contacts and has this option enabled will get notified.
