Currently we just use MeshBuilder for zone outlines and sides, so they're just flat blocks of colour and don't look great. Our zones are one of very few significant visual additions to existing maps, so if we could improve their look that'd be a really big improvement to the game.
I don't have a huge amount of input for this, just want to get this tracked and hopefully we can discuss more. A few ideas to get started:
Fake "glow" effect on the outlines, similar to what CS:GO/L2D2 do
Some kind of fancy animated texture on the sides, subtle ripples effects, maybe animated flow map approach? Not sure what existing shaders would be best
Some super fancy light-emission system that's probably totally impossible with our current renderer
Any input from others would be greatly appreciated, fun issue for us to brainstorm random ideas
