Topical corticosteroids

Corneal Dystrophy, Epithelial Basement Membrane OMIM:121820 MONDO:0007375 PMID 30809089

| Reduce inflammation | LoteprednolFluorometholonePrednisolone acetate | Failed lubrication and punctal occlusion

Topical corticosteroids are available in the form of eye drops or ointments, and are applied directly to the surface of the eye. They work by reducing inflammation and suppressing the immune response in the eye, which can help to alleviate symptoms and promote healing in conditions such as uveitis, keratitis, and allergic conjunctivitis.

In the context of corneal diseases, topical corticosteroids are commonly used to treat inflammation and pain associated with conditions such as corneal ulcers, herpetic keratitis, and bullous keratopathy. They may also be used after corneal surgery or trauma to reduce inflammation and promote healing.

However, the use of topical corticosteroids in the treatment of corneal diseases is not without risks. Prolonged use of corticosteroids can lead to side effects such as elevated intraocular pressure (which can lead to glaucoma), cataracts, and increased risk of infection. In addition, corticosteroids can mask the symptoms of an underlying infection, making it more difficult to diagnose and treat.
