Site-wide plan for results ranking and workflow #997

There are a few disconnected tickets and threads relevant to ranking of table results and to the user's workflow through the app. It would be useful to have a unified strategy which we can adapt for more specific scenarios (ranking homologs according to sequence similarity). Considerations for back and front end should be included. @harryhoch Can we put on agenda for an upcoming UI meeting?

A more specific idea I had was to include, within the table, a little sparkline histogram showing a peek of the results count for the 8 categories. Histo data below is not real, of course (even includes negatives); it is just pasted to give a general idea. Other less busy options would just be a single score summarizing the degree of data richness, with or without some basic indications of in what categories. Could be computationally intensive so may need to precompute the counts. The ultimate goal is to convey to the user at a glance, which next step will be the most fruitful for them. The best ideas come from lots of ideas, so please chime in.

@jmcmurry , I like this line of thinking. yes, we can certainly try to discuss. Perhaps Monarch can help me buy a new refrigerator....
