From the submission to OBO review :
Are animals bred for research purposes (e.g. Syrian hamsters, B6 mice) in the scope of this ontology? That is one area we are very interested in, and it would be great if information on e.g. strains from Jackson labs could be represented in the same broader format. Completely understood if that is outside of your main domain, but it will be nice to have different extensions of NCBI taxonomy done in a compatible ways.
lab animals could be added to VBO, especially since the working definition of "breed: in VBO is:
"In VBO, a breed is defined as “a group of animals within a species that have been selected for specific characteristics (such as traits, behavior,...) and allowed to reproduce and have offspring”. Breeds included in VBO have been characterized, defined, and determined by umbrella organizations."

spreadsheet sent by Randi Vita (here) : flat lists of most of the vertebrates that we have curated experimental data for and that will overlap with your project. I might have missed some, but this should give you a good idea. we do not claim to have the best nomenclature for them - we just try to reflect what terms immunology authors use. we do also have synonyms for many of these, especially for the mice. I included the ncbi taxonomy parent on each tab, so you could get an idea of our hierarchy. if you ever want more info, we can do a zoom and I can show you our searchable organism tree, which inserts these into the ncbi tax tree. the iris that are ontie are our internal ids and the nulls are awaiting ontie ids. I'd love a future where all of the onties are mapped to your ids instead, but I know you just got started, so we are in no hurry. I could also get you a list of pmids where each species/strain was used, if that is of interest, but for some, it will be a long list. we tried mapping mice and rats to mgi and rgd a few times, but we were only able to map a tiny subset of terms, so the project did not go very far.
