representation of crossbred animals #6

Crossbred animals (e.g. Mongrel) are a cross between 2 breeds. They are in VBO as a new breed, but might need to have 2 parents. Need to review what was done previously (e.g cross of laboratory mouse).

Hi Sabrina This is an important question. Our favoured approach follows the approach of the venom codes (https://venomcoding.org/), which we are not actually using, but with which we hope to link some time in the future. The strategy for crossbred animals is as follows:

  1. if the crossbred animal is named with only one breed, its VBO breed label is "breed-name cross", e.g. "Friesian cross"
  2. if the crossbred animal is named with two breeds, its VBO breed label is "breed-name1 x breed-name2 cross", e.g. "Standardbred x Tennessee Walking Horse cross" In VBO, most (if not all) of these crosses will be transboundary "breeds", with parent = NCBI:taxonid Both of the above examples are included in the new transboundary breed names I am uploading today.

@sabrinatoro @katiermullen can we make a design pattern yaml for cross-breeds? What relation connects the cross to the parent lineages?
