Dorper sheep vs White Dorper #92

Hi Sabrina,

Dorper sheep http://purl.obolibrary.org/obo/VBO_0001397 have currently White Dorper as an exact synonym. Dorper are black-headed sheep and I would argue that White Dorper are a separate transboundary breed that has been developed from crossing Dorper's with a different breed to create the White Dorper. So White Dorper are not an exact match to Dorper. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dorper. In Australia they are considered two breeds that are looked after by the same breed association: https://www.australiandorper.com.au/

Can I please request a new trans boundarybreed term 'White Dorper'

@ImkeTammen currently VBO:0001397 has 2 x-refs to OMIA: OMIA:977 and OMIA: 1251 Which one refers to "white dorper" and which one refers to "dorper"?

thanks!

I am wondering whether "white dorper" is a specific type of "dorper".

Based on https://smallfarms.cornell.edu/2011/01/dorper-sheep-truths-and-myths/ "Two varieties of Dorper Sheep were created: the black headed Dorper and an all white variety, the White Dorper sheep."

Also: white dorper, Paraguay (Sheep) (VBO:0014522) : currently a child of "dorper" (VBO:0001397)

@ImkeTammen, @katiermullen thoughts?

In OMIA Dorper is 1251 and White Dorper is 977

Different sources treat them as the same breed or different breeds - see links below - I thus thought it would be best to describe them as two different breeds as at least the Australian breed society treats them as two different breeds. The history reported in the South African breed society page (where the breed originates) describes different origin - the white Dorper actually have some Merino genetics included (in addition to the Blackhead Persian and Dorset Horn that is the main genetic background). So my preference would be treating them as two breeds but they could be treated as variety

https://breeds.okstate.edu/sheep/dorper-sheep.html: "The Dorper breed was developed through the crossing of the Blackhead Persian ewe with the Dorset Horn and this resulted in the birth of some white Dorper lambs. The difference in color is therefore merely a matter of preference for each breeder. Black-headed breeders constitute about 85% of the members of the Dorper Sheep Breeders' Society of South Africa." Australia: https://www.australiandorper.com.au/breed-information/ : "The Dorper and White Dorper sheep are breeds developed in South Africa"

South Africa (where the breed originates):https://dorpersa.co.za/breed-history/ - the breed
