I think at first this can take the form of, when you destroy an asteroid, there's a random chance for some kind of item drop such as ore
it would be cool to also possibly have the asteroids split in to smaller asteroids when destroyed, and maybe destroying big asteroids causes a split, whereas destroying an asteroid that is small enough may give a chance to receive an item drop
