Monero has a tough balance to make. On the one hand it is a coin defined by the awesome cutting-edge privacy it offers people. On the other hand it has associations with enabling crime and seedy/dodgy behavior. And I think there are a few small things we can do to help this situation.
One of the easiest is to make Monero’s official wallet GUI default to its light theme. This is because the dark theme makes the wallet look like it is used for buying stuff on the dark web. Yes, the dark theme also feels more private, which is the central identity of Monero (and crypto in general, I would argue), but in my view the technology behind Monero is quite sufficient for the user to feel like their transactions are private.
The experience of actually using Monero should be as free and friendly as possible. A new user should open up our wallet software and not have thoughts like "Woah. This feels edgy." They should just use the wallet.
I say this as someone who uses the GUI with its dark theme enabled. It is beautifully done. Kudos to the devs who designed it! But if we want to make Monero feel more about privacy and less about the dark web then the dark theme should be an option to enable, not on by default.
