Crank bolts and bottom bracket dinging #11

Closed monospaced closed 10 years ago

Bottom bracket does not appear to be in great shape, and starts dinging after a bit of hard riding.

This can be temporarily quietened by tightening the 2 crank blots, but these are not in good shape. The drive side is pretty rounded and shifts oddly when tightened, and the off-side has lost it's 'cover'.

Problem first manifested a couple of months ago, when the off-side crank bolt completely unwound, so something is surely amiss.

LBS calling…

Bottom bracket has actually been pretty quiet the past week (which is handy as I've mislaid the allen key for tightening it up!)

Service booked at Full City Cycles this Friday… let’s see what they say.

Full City reported nothing wrong with the bottom bracket!

They were also able to tighten up both the old crank bolts by making sure the allen key was fully inserted, and said that they can just come loose over time through normal movement.

Ended up replacing the cranks bolts anyway, so now have 2 new ones.

Update to this one.

Was tightening the offside crank bolt prior to a long ride, and managed to shear the head of the bolt off, leave the the thread inside the bottom bracket!

Down to the LBS, they identified that the bottom bracket didn't have a long enough spindle to fully thread the crank arms on to. Ta da! So that was the reason the bolts were always loosening/dinging.

Now have new bottom bracket, and so far it's been silent…
