Snapped chainring bolts / bent chainring! #22

Oh noes, snapped/dropped 4 chainring bolts today, and the new chainring I installed is completely bent out of shape! Lucky I wasn't hurt, as I realised something was up and slowed down in time.

Reckon it was some combination of:

i. aluminium bolts ii. not properly tight iii. beast legs

i think once the first bolt went, the rest (and the ring itself) were doomed, owing to relentless mashing, spinning and mad skids.

It is very possible I didn't get the bolts tighten enough, and/or they loosened up over time.

For now I've put my old and worn 48T back on with the old bolts (hard to get them tight, but should be ok for a temp fix).

Have ordered another 47T Surly, with some steel chainring bolts, and a new bolt tool. Will need to fit these asap, make sure the bolts are tight, and that they stay that way!

One issue is the Ice Toolz chainring bolt tool doesn't work well on the bolt right behind the offside crank, owing to it's length. The new tool on order should address that.

Need to sort out this bolt issue once and for all, must be able to get them consistently tight.

Put the new chain ring on a while back, with stainless steel bolts, the ice toolz thing worked ok, no problems so far.
