document where data comes from #4

can you add a note in the readme where the data comes from, and preferably in the rakefile actually go fetch it before converting?

Ping on this issue, as one of the leading gems for this functionality it's important that we can keep the zip codes up to date!!

I too am interested in where this data comes from. If I knew I have some time to update it and submit a pull request.

After some research, it looks like https://download.geonames.org/export/zip/ may be the source of the data.

"official" confirmation would still be lovely (@monterail?) also, it's only the US, which makes the gem useless for 0.995% of the world's countries, which i personally find a little problematic given that it's the top hit in searches. but with no reply in 8 years, and a bunch of open PRs, it seems safe to say that Zed's dead?

The official answer is https://download.geonames.org/export/zip/ will put that info in README, and yes currently the only supported zip codes are the ones for US. The current maintainer of the project is @brodyhoskins, and as I see he is pushing the development further.
