What soundcard to you have (make, model, chip)?

Terratec Aureon 5.1 USB MKII

soundchip: according to here
http://www.idealo.de/preisvergleich/OffersOfProduct/747091_-aureon-5-1-usb-mk-ii
-terratec.html c-media cmi 8738

What steps will reproduce the problem?

1. after I click "install" at the driver installation, a small windows box
appears with headline "installdriver ()" and no text in it, but an exclamation
mark symbol. only thing I can do is click on OK and then nothing happens.

2. it also doesn't work to install the driver manually via update drivers in
windows device manager. when I specify the directory, windows cannot find any
suitable driver.

What version of the driver are you using? On what operating system? What
version of the operationg system are you using (32 or 64 bit)?

Windowx XP Pro SP3

not really related to this issue, but when using the standard terratec drivers
and SPDIF output, I also get sound from those files which are not supposed to
put out sound due to spdif limitations (e.g. 2.0 24-bit 96kHz flac or 5.1
24-bit flac (which is then limited to 2 channels + sub though)). is this some
horrible downmixing? would prefer the card would not play such files at all
when they are out of the spec range for SPDIF.

This device doesn't have a 8738 chip, but probably some other cmeia chip.

Despite the claims in the product description, most cmedia chips aren't capable
of transmitting 24bit audio on the SPDIF.
