ICMS Course Outcomes need to be improved #214

The main issue is that the course outcomes are simply a regurgitation of the ABET a-k criteria. Actual course outcomes that reflect what happens in the course need to be written and they need to be associated with the ABET criteria assigned to this course.

For example for EME 185B:

EME 185B Summary of Course Content (from ICMS):

  1. The engineering design process - introduction and overview. 2. Development processes and organizations. 3. Identification of the design problem: market needs; development of product specifications. 4. Concept generation and selection: systematic methods for concept generation and ranking using multiple realistic constraints and appropriate engineering standards. 5. Product architecture. 6. Management of the design process: methods of scheduling. 7. Various engineering case studies. LABORATORY PROJECT: Design documentation using computer; prototype fabrication in machine shop; testing prototype experimentally.

EME 185B Course Learning Outcomes (as approved by the MAE faculty): Students will be able to (1) work comfortably and competently with mathematics, science, and basic engineering principles, (2) design and conduct experiments as well as collect, analyze and interpret data, (3) design an engineering system, component, or process to meet prescribed needs and constraints, (4) work comfortably on multi-disciplinary teams, (5) identify, formulate and solve engineering problems, (6) understand professional and ethical responsibility, (7) communicate effectively, (8) understand the impact of engineering solutions in a global, economic, environmental, and societal context, (9) stay abreast of contemporary issues, and (10) use the techniques, skills, and modern engineering tools necessary for engineering practice.
