Is there a budget for the kiosk?
Using stackable bins to organize all the materials is probably the best way to go (it's also what the ESSC uses (http://engineering.ucdavis.edu/essc/gallery/)), but they cost quite a bit (see Google doc), <$200 total.
I could also use regular storage bins to cut costs or use a combination of the two (e.g. stackable bins for small-medium (size and/or quantity) materials and storage bins for larger (size and/or quantity) materials). These may also be a bit more of a hazard to access some materials.
In the doc, I arranged the materials according to size and probable use, keeping in mind possible EME150 use and planned to use all the bins and dividers. Of course, the materials are interchangeable, space allowing.
Also, Felicia and Stephani (CoE Facilities Coordinator (?)) both don't have surplus cabinets as of now.
I have a few links to IKEA wardrobes I'll probably use on the doc. There are 2 that are $99 and a larger one that is $129, pre-tax. The documentation isn't specific enough to CAD an interior, but everything should fit. I was planning to take a trip to IKEA and measure the models if they have them out. The Sac location has them all in stock, but I'm not sure if that means they'll have models of them...
Also, IKEA has a pre-made drawer insert that can be used for locking electronics. For both the drawer and the wardrobe, they'll need locks installed, probably keyed cam locks.
Did you check at aggie surplus yet for cabinets?
I just re-checked the inventory for sale and there doesn't seem to be one that's large enough to accomodate all the materials.
There are a few metal bookcases (cheapest is $45) that might work if I take out the shelves and make doors, but cost of the bookcase + doors would probably add up to that of a wardrobe.
I have alternative material arrangements to cut costs, 2 besides stackable bin, though one is "in progress" right now.
The cabinet from Aggie Surplus will work, but it'll be pretty crowded inside the cabinet, so finding space to store new materials may be a bit difficult. This assumes that EME150 prototypes will be made with dowels, cardboard, and other previously listed materials. The IKEA insert could also be replaced by just attaching a door to the shelf.
I'm working on cadding a configuration for the 3-door IKEA cabinet. It'll probably have everything in the photo but without the makeshift shelf and more designed shelving on the side with one door.
Looks nice! We could buy two cabinets I suppose if needed.
That's another option, but getting the IKEA one would probably be cheaper (and nicer), though we'd still have to ask Felicia for permission. Have you asked her yet about getting furniture from off campus?
By the way, there's an additional delivery charge of $16.25 per quarter hour from Aggie Surplus to account for in the cost.
I forgot to mention that that's the $75 cabinet. The handle is a little quirky, so you have to gently push on the seam between the doors to turn the handle, but it works fine other than that.
Probably going to use PVC pipes (3" diameter) to organize dowels instead http://www.ronhazelton.com/projects/how_to_make_a_dowel_organizer
This is the arrangement with the IKEA cabinet. It requires more work (pick-up, assembly and lock installation), but it's nicer.
Update: Unfortunately, the $75 cabinet with the funky handle is not available, but there're two $150 cabinets that will work also and come with adjustable shelves. It has similar dimensions, but is ~2" less in depth and 2" more in width, meaning full sized posterboards (22"x28") won't fit easily in the slots, but not much else is affected. None of the cabinets from Aggie Surplus have keys with their locks, so it'll need replacing.
I'll check them out tomorrow and most likely order one of them (before these get bought too...) unless you'd rather have the IKEA one.
If you really want the IKEA cabinet you will need to ask someone in the MAE office (Felicia, maybe) whether or not we are allowed to buy furniture from IKEA. I've been told that it is frowned upon and that they may not reimburse at all because we have contracts with furniture vendors.
Awesome, that makes the decision easier. I didn't realize it'd be that difficult to get permission for IKEA furniture, which is why it was kept as an option. It's nice, but not worth the trouble. Anyway, I'll check out and order the Aggie Surplus cabinets tomorrow ask Jacob when it can be delivered to avoid disturbing summer classes/camp (if there are any).
Purchases from Aggie Surplus can be made via email (aggiesurplus@ucdavis.edu) or phone (530) 752-2145), but I'll need the following information (some of which I already have):
1) Tag number (783620) 2) Description of item( STORAGE UNIT/ CABINET, METAL, DARK GRAY, 2 DOORS, 4 ADJUSTABLE SHELVES, ON CART, W/ WHEELS, NO KEYS H; 78 INCHES X W: 37.5 INCHES X D; 20 INCHES (4768)) 3) Contact information including name, department, phone number, fax number 4) DaFIS Account number or billing ID
I just need the account number, but I was wondering if you know if Felicia or you have to make the purchase of if I'm allowed to, in which case, you'll have all the info needed to make a purchase.
Final arrangement: Top shelf is included with the cabinet.
24 Stackable bins 4-Drawer cart IKEA Drawer insert 1-2 Square dowels/ moldings depending on lengths found (Something similar to this)
4 Shelves (Re-purposing to make the slots) These were found at ACE and come in limited colors. 1-2 Sheets of 1/2" thick plywood to build the drawer frame and Shopbot the Post-it dispenser, depending on the sheet size. Still looking for <18"tool organizer. Maybe a magnetic one.
Just letting you know that couple of kiosk purchases need your approval.
You can buy replacement keys through this company called EasyKeys.com. All you need is the lock code written on the lock itself (6480F8). Customer service confirmed that this is the key we're looking for so I'm planning on ordering a few.
How many copies do you think you'll need?
For the post-it note dispenser, since the plan is to magnetize it and stick it to the door, I'll probably make it out of styrofoam poster board and double layer it so it stays light.
There are a few OPS orders that need approval.
I'll approve to. Sorry for not getting to them. I've got a bunch deadlines that are keeping me busy.
Actually, I've got to sort out some account stuff with Felicia. I'll do my best to get that taken care of today.
I figured out the accounts, orders are approved.
That's great to hear. Thanks!
There's another purchase that needs approval. It's the hardware for the slots and the cam locks.
Approved by me.
For the paper cutter, ULINE has a 36" one with just a straight edge and another with a serrated blade. Which would you prefer I order? It can be mounted but mounting hardware is not included, though I'm assuming it just takes a few nuts and bolts.
No idea. I don't know what the difference in functionality is.
The serrated one just gives an easier, cleaner cut and is ~$20 more. It's also an exposed blade so it's a little more of a safety concern.
Just get the plain one. I think that is fine.
I put in an order for an MDF board from Home Depot for the drawers, but realized after that it can't be ordered online, so the request will very likely be denied, so I'll just be reimbursed later. Also, t's not letting me cancel the request, so I just wanted to let you know that it doesn't need to be approved.
Ok, thanks.
In case you haven't seen it, this is what the kiosk looks like now.
I emailed Stephani Shone from the CoE about replacing the paper sign.
If you want something fancier like what's on the conference door, I can email Paul Dorn (also from the CoE).
The lock issue seems to be unreasonably difficult. Can you just do something like: http://cdn.small.masterlock.com/testimonial/DSC00697.JPG
@viviantran27 What is the status on the lock for the cabinet? I'd really like to get that working. If you can't work on it now I can have you pass this off to one of my TAs. Let me know ASAP.
The lock only comes with screws since it's typically used for thicker doors, so it needs nuts. I'm getting them today and will hopefully finish installing it tomorrow morning assuming the room will be free.
The lock is installed, but it's a little awkward to lock because the way the doors are designed (right door slightly protrudes outwards), so the screws on the left/ hinge side were loosened to allow the cabinet to lock. I'm not sure if the holes are symmetric on both the hinge and lock pieces, but it may be worth a try to swap them to see if that works better. Other ideas to improve the fit include bending the metal flap and filing the drilled holes so that the lock and cut of the lock profile fit better. I'll see what I can do next week, but if you want to have a TA take a look at it, that's fine, too.
The lock itself only came with 2 keys, so I left one in the cabinet and took one to copy. (In a previous meeting, you said to make 4 copies.) Because Ace doesn't have exact blanks of the key we need, they only made 1 test copy to see if cutting the same profile (as best they can) on a very similar blank would work. If it works, I'll get 3 more.
@viviantran27: Did the copy that was made at Ace work out?
@ixjlyons: Luckily, it worked! I'll make 3 more copies and stop by @moorepants 's office to drop them off later this week or leave them at the office for him to pick up. Do you know who took the other key? The cabinet was locked when I got there, and I'm worried about Jacob being locked out of the electronics drawers and/ or Moore being locked out of the cabinet.
@viviantran27 I had it :) It should be fine now. I'm glad the copy worked out.
We need a kiosk to hold various design and lightweight prototyping materials and tools to support the design activities in EME 150A and EME 185A/B.
