3D Printers for the Design Studio #5

We'd like to get some 3D printers in the design studio or the CAE lab.

Goals

Have a low overhead way for students to 3D print things.
Setup for use to support design classes (ENG4 labs, 150A prototyping, EME 185, EAE 130, new aero design/manufacturing class).

Tasks

[x] Find out what printers we should buy.
[x] Figure out where they should go.
[ ] Get table to set them on.
[x] Get approval from Jacob for space use in the rooms.
[x] How to connect to computers?
[ ] How do students pay for/get materials?
[ ] How do students get permission to use? Do we need to restrict access until you've taken a mini-intro? Or can we just let them use it just like they use a printer?
[ ] How will the machines be maintained?

I spoke with Jacob and he seemed mostly ok with putting the printers on the back wall in the computer side. But wanted to see more about the space constraints. He's got some ideas on how we could schedule the printers with students and things. You should check in with him and discuss ideas.

I talked with a 3D printerOS rep and he said that an education package with unlimited printers and users is $5500, but UCD is already a customer so theoretically, we won't need to pay for another license. I'll email Dave today and see if we can use the program.

I just checked and indeed you were right, UC Davis is already our customer and we do sell site-licenses usually, this means you can use our software campus-wide. Please contact Dave MacKinnon dmackinnon@ucdavis.edu for more information."

EFL: not sure if they are charging for material directly to students or if they are going to let students directly use the 3D printers.
3D printer OS: has reporting system that will tell you which person on the network used what material (how much)
Could charge students for access codes (not sure if this could be changed quarterly), would give at least one time income for every user.
[ ] Vivian: find out how it is possible to charge student accounts. (ask felicia)
[ ] Vivian: find out if we can change access codes
[ ] Jason: read proposal and edit
