(solved) powered hub? #1

Awesome article, wish I'd read this before I used OpenWRT. The disable_usb_sq=0 flag was the solution to a crashing problem of my Alfa. :-(

Note: Very few Powered USB 3 Hubs will work well with Raspberry Pi hardware. The primary problem has to do with the backfeeding of current into the Raspberry Pi. I have avoided using a powered hub in this setup to enable a very high degree of stability. Before I disabled the sq flag, I started using a powered hub. I didn't help but didn't seem to hurt.

Could it damage my pi4? I like that the has on/off switches for each port.

I don't know. My 4b is still alive and I have gone round and round with a couple of powered hubs, one of which I bought after investigating the problem and seeing how widespread it is. I suspect there is an engineering problem is the usb subsystems in the PIs.

The good news is how little power the Alfa ACM takes. It seems to be unique among AC1200 class adapters in that regard.

I use OpenWRT on a ZyXEL NBG6817. I like OpenWRT but many situations don't really need a router and with the 4b, it can max throughput my network capability and still run BOINC and other things I do with it. It is really stable and cool which is why I documented the setup. Something that has surprised me is how well the onboard 2g wifi performs. The onbaord 5g is not that great for AP duty but 2g works well.
