Hi @castillofrancodamian
Thanks for posting this. I have been looking at this. I'm seeing the periodic increase but it is not a large as what you are seeing:

Right now I have no idea what could be causing this but hopefully we figure out a way to mediate the issue.
@morrownr
@morrownr With wavemon you can see in "inactive" the moment in which the Ping is triggered.
And when it stabilizes
Another problem that always happens is that it disconnects from the network every few minutes.
Several minutes later the adapter disappears and it is no longer possible to connect to any network. NetworkManager is empty. iw dev
doesn't show anything. The "solution" is to physically disconnect and reconnect the adapter.
This is excellent info. What caught my eye on the first screen shot is that signal level decreased dramatically. What could cause this? The first thing that came to mind is beamforming. Beamforming is not working. Could it be that beamforming is messed up enough to kill the signal periodically?
I have worked on beamforming on the public version of this driver but was not able to figure it out at that time. I was able to get beamforming to work on the 8812bu driver. I will put this on my list and start working it as soon as possible. It is possible that it is something else so any additional information would be a good thing. Could we experiment with various module parameters to see if there are changes? Sure.

Is this a "science problem" (e.g. we have all the data streams but it is unclear which mathematical operation to perform to best combine them) or an "implementation problem" (e.g. we don't know which function to call or the return values are unclear)?
@michelwi
we don't know which function to call or the return values are unclear?
I have no idea what the problem could be. My thoughts right now are:
I hate to start digging into this driver until we have data showing that the issue is specific to this driver.
FYI: I have a lot of things I am working on and it is not just with this driver. I did not set a deadline for releasing this driver for a reason. We may have some things that require a deep dive and that can take time.

Keep in mind that these captures are from two different networks, but the symptom is the same.
I have also tested Xubuntu Live with Ventoy and persistence and I can say that I have hardly noticed any problems like the ones I have reported.

Ping to 1.1.1.1 and with speedtest in the middle of the test. There is no noticeable increase in latency. Approximately 19-21 ms without doing anything. Approximately 30-35 ms when doing a speedtest. I have to clarify that the router is a Mercusys MR70X with OpenWrt Snapshots and SQM enabled. I don't know if it has anything to do with the fact that there was no considerable increase in latency when doing the speedtest, but it is good to clarify. The other networks are with cable modems from the same ISP.

Ping to 1.1.1.1 and speedtest in the middle of the test. A considerable increase in latency will be seen when doing the speedtest, but I think it is normal due to the distance and the number of networks on the same band. Of course, at one point you can see the same amount of ms of approximately 2000-3000 ms as in the issues that I have presented and the same symptoms that the browser is thinking.

Third network at a distance of approximately 20 meters. 5 GHz band, channel 52, 80 MHZ and WPA2.
Ping to 1.1.1.1 and with a speedtest in the middle of the test. It can be seen that the latency has increased considerably but apparently it is normal due to the distance. There aren't that many networks on that channel.

@castillofrancodamian
I'm posting a definition just for anyone reading this issue to make sure we are on the same sheet of music:
"In a nutshell, jitter is an unintended jump in ping rate or latency. When the rate changes, that's called jitter because it shakes the signal and causes a spike in ping rate or latency on the way to and from the server, slowing down signal transmission and causing temporary disruption and possible data loss."
I was looking at your information above and yes, increases in traffic, especially heavy traffic will certainly increase latency/ping times.
I decided to go over to testmynet.com and do some testing: (using the driver we are working on)
That is a lot of testing on one graph. It is testing servers around the work.
I disconnected the adapter running this driver and connected my PCIe adapter running with a mt7922 chipset. As much as possible, the details are the same:
What does this tell us?
What I am looking for is a way to determine if it is this driver that is the problem.
What first brought this issue to your attention? Have you had disconnects and drops?
@morrownr
Regarding the above graphs:
One big thing that I could not control in the tests is the signal capability of the mt7922 card and the 8812au adapter. The 8812au adapter is an Alfa ACH and shows signal level of -42. The mt7922 card is an ASUS card and shows a signal level of -61. That is a big difference.The difference is likely the quality of the antennas and amp.
Could this different account for the increased average ping times and jitter? I'm not sure but am trying to figure it out.
The graph below is the ASUS card connect to a WiFi router that has stronger antennas and is a shlightly shorter distance to my client system. Signal level is now -41.
For what it is worth, iperf3 shows the following on the WiFi 5 AP:

We see a little less jitter but still more that with the 8812au adapter so let's test it:
The 8812au shows a signal level of -25, which may be getting stronger than we want. Signals stronger than about -30 can have their own problems so I try to stay away from that. Testing close to the AP is not good. I would never test closer than maybe 10-12 feet away from an AP but in this case I am about 22 feet and 2 walls from the AP and still getting a signal that is too strong... darn Alfa can make some adapters with range. The longest range Alfa is currently the ACHM. I have one. It astounds me its range. Anyway, here is the perf3:

Does this tell us anything?
@morrownr
What first brought this issue to your attention? Have you had disconnects and drops?
Yes, in this private version as in the public version. It seems that the problem still exists and has not been corrected. Maybe it is because the model of my adapter is not fully supported. But what catches my attention is how these problems frequently appear in my installed Arch Linux Linux distribution and not so much in Xubuntu Live. I really don't know what triggers this problem because it's random.
I'd like to see others here do ping checks to see if we are all seeing something similar. Both bands need to be checked and any report needs to say which band is used.
Here are my tests. The adapter is, I think, a Netis WF2190. I am running on Debian 12 with kernel 6.1.
Additionally, here are as a baseline the same cases from Windows 11
It turns out I do not experience any jitter under debian and if any ping is delayed, then these are singular events. But under windows I observe packets of 4 pings with increased latency. They occur irregularly but quite frequently (~ once perminute or so).
I made a screen recording to show the usage experience.

Right now I am not trying to correct anything as I don't know what the problem is.

Not likely.

Continued testing with different distros is one thing I think we should do. I also think the research would help.
As I look over the data @michelwi posted and then go over the data I have posted again, what I am seeing if that neither of us is experiencing latercy increases that would disrupt service. Jitter is normal over a network that carries a load and it increases as the load increases. Neither of us are experiencing situations where we have to pull the adapter and plug it in again to get things going again. I thought it was interesting that this driver seemed to slightly outperform the card that I compared it to and it was also interesting the @michelwi 's test on Windows seemed to indicate better performance with this driver as opposed to the Windows driver.
We certainly don't have the answer yet but in workingon these drivers over the years, I have seem many problems related to differences in the distros. So far we have been testing on Debian 12 and we see nothing abnormal. You are seeing the 3-4 second latercies on Arch with better results from Xubuntu. We need more testing on different distros and hardware.
@michelwi
Outstanding report. Thanks.
@morrownr
Right now I am not trying to correct anything as I don't know what the problem is.
I meant that it has not been fixed by Realtek between the old version and the new one. In the video you can see that the problem appears when there is no load.
I meant that it has not been fixed by Realtek between the old version and the new one.
Okay understand. This new version is not really that new as it was completed in 2021 and Realtek passed on to my contact that this version ends their work on this driver. We are on our own.
The problem you are seeing is going to take a continued deep dive which may take time. More data from others on different distros and hardware is what I think we need. From what I have seen so far, I think this may be caused by some external to the driver. There are a lot of different apps and other supporting parts that are involved in networking and we might narrow down what the problem is with continued testing on different distros.
What you might do it stop by the Arch forums at times to go over what is being posted to see if other Arch users may be seeing something similar.

Be carefull about updating to the latest PasPiOS based on Debian 12 as it is Alpha quality. I run headless and they have screwed up vnc and ssh. Fix one and then they break it again. I'm going to have to go back to the 2023-05-03 RasPiOS to do AP testing.
Thanks for the results.
I guess I could create a new Issue for all AP testing stuff? Whadda ya think?

On my headless 3B model, the debian 12 based RasPiOS runs flawless with ssh. I am not using vnc though.

Sure, one for every mode of operation.
Done.
@morrownr In addition to testing on pure Arch Linux KDE, I tested this driver on Xubuntu 23.10, Manjaro KDE, Fedora 39 GNOME, and openSUSE GNOME. In all of them the problem of latency occurs when searching for wireless networks in the network manager. And in normal Internet use, the error does not occur in all of them. Those based on Arch present the error at all times.

@castillofrancodamian
Reminder: before any new testing, remember to update the driver on your systems:
$ git pull $ sudo sh install-driver.sh
options 8812au rtw_drv_log_level=1 rtw_vht_enable=1 rtw_switch_usb_mode=1 rtw_power_mgnt=0 rtw_dfs_region_domain=1 rtw_country_code=AR
With a merge from yesterday, I have changed the file 8812au.conf considerably to make it clearer that some of the options are only for AP mode as the defaults are fine for managed mode. The new default options line is:
options 8812au rtw_switch_usb_mode=0
I now have 2 suggested option lines for AP mode depending on the band you are using.
Can I get you to retest 2 of your tests, one with an Arch based distro and one that is not based on Arch with the following:
First with: options 8812au rtw_switch_usb_mode=2
Second with: options 8812au rtw_switch_usb_mode=1
The first options line above shuts down USB3. I want to see if USB3 could be an issue. I have seen systems with specific USB3 hub chipsets/drivers that have problems that could account for what you are seeing. If we shut down USB3 and go with USB2, we should be able to tell if that is the problem or is contributing to the problem.
In all of them the problem of latency occurs when searching for wireless networks in the network manager.
Please make me a short guide that tells me the steps needed to duplicate what you are doing with NM. I want to see this.
And in normal Internet use, the error does not occur in all of them. Those based on Arch present the error at all times.
This is interesting. I do have two systems that are dedicated to testing and they are multi-boot so I can throw a new installation up for testing. Manjaro is Arch based and it the one I would prefer to test. Would you provide a link to the specific iso that you are testing with?
Thanks,
@morrownr

remember to use sudo ./edit-options.sh

file.

Onward we go. Do you have another adapter that you could test so that we have something for contrast?
FYI: As I continue to work on other things, I continue to take a look at this issue hoping to gain some insight into what is going on.
I am confused about what error you are seeing. If you are seeing a problem with one OS, and not another, and the driver is the same, then the problem is with the OS! Please tell us what kernrel versions you are running, etc. Do not post then separately. I am too busy to look at offline files.
It is normal for latency to happen when scanning. There is only one radio,
@lwfinger
Those actually are online files. Just click on the little triangle to expand.
If you are seeing a problem with one OS, and not another, and the driver is the same, then the problem is with the OS!
The issue is latency that will sometimes last for 3-4 seconds and sometimes cause a disconnect for @castillofrancodamian . I have been unable to duplicate it here on 2 systems. The reports indicate it is happening on Arch and Arch based distros. I was thinking of throwing up Manjaro when I have time this week but I agree with your logic. The problem is likely in Arch.
@morrownr
But "What kernel verrsions"?
@lwfinger The Kernel versions are in the videos, in addition to this entire issue.
@castillofrancodamian It pisses me off when I ask for explicite data and am told to look back through the videos. I am through with you!!!!
@morrownr - Look for the code that starts the scan, and turn it off when the interface has a connection. The downside is that you will need to kill the connection before you 2ill be able to create another. rtw88 has ways to prioritize the connection and BT over the scans.
@lwfinger Throughout this time, the Kernel version was different between the different distributions tested. The problem perpetuates.

Hi @morrownr about this high latency..after 2days using this private driver I've notice like this..
this is my normal ping without doing anything
and this one wen i pull out the wifi on system tray
as you can see the high latency came out when trying to scan available network
and this 2 screen shot on wavemon
this one is wen i try to scan available network on wavemon
i dont know if this is the bug why always high latency when trying to scan available network hope this can help you what im trying to do is disable or stop automatic scanning available network but i don't know how to do it..if someone know how to do it let me know
plss dont laugh my english im not good with this
plss dont laugh my english im not good with this
No hay problema. Your English is good. Do you mind if I ask what your native lanaguage is?
why always high latency when trying to scan available network
Unless I am missing something, this is normal. The radios in our adapters can handle a lot of things but not more than one thing at a time so if you ask it to do many things, slow is what you will get.
I often use LinSSID. I only start scanning once I have disconnected from an AP. If I don't disconnect, bogged down is a good way to put it. I've tested this with maybe 25 different adapters with many different drivers.
Let's keep digging.
I agree that trying to do a lot of things will slow down the throughput, particularly in the 2.4 GHz band, which is already crowded. With 5 GHz, the shorter range eliminates your neighbors and the higher speeds reduce the effect.
native lanaguage is?
Tagalog is my language thank you for your answer
@castillofrancodamian
I have continued to test this as I have been testing AP mode for the last few weeks, I'm not seeing a problem. That does not mean that there is not a problem. It just means I am not seeing it. Since it causes disconnections for you, that makes it a serious problem. Have you been able to test with a different router? Maybe a friend can test in a different location?
This is the only reported bug left at this point. The best option at this point appears to be that I ask in Issue 2 for all of us here (16) to test and report.

@morrownr Am I really the only one who has any of these problems? In comments from other people they say that they also have this latency problem.
I have to admit that I don't often see this latency issue on Arch Linux anymore. It only appears when you open the network manager. The configuration is options 8812au rtw_switch_usb_mode=1 rtw_dfs_region_domain=1 rtw_country_code=AR rtw_vht_enable=2 rtw_power_mgnt=0

Am I really the only one who has any of these problems?
I did not say that. I said "This is the only reported bug left at this point."
The testing I have been doing for the last several weeks has been AP mode. While connected to the AP using this driver I have pounded it with testing of latency as well as other things. For the last 2 weeks I have been on a DFS channel with no other congestion at all. Network Manager is not active on the RasPi4B that was serving as the AP. The AP was rock solid. No disconnections for the weeks on my testing. I only took it down about once per week to do different testing like band 1 and band 2.
My AP testing is finished so I will move the adapter to another machine to do P2P-client testing tomorrow. I will also work on other testing to see if I can see the disconnection problem.

I've been doing a little research. Could this problem be related to power saving? I don't know but it is reasonable to do some testing to see.
Try using the following. Change wlan0 to your interface name. See what you get with different settings.
$ iw wlan0 get power_save $ iw wlan0 set power_save off $ iw wlan0 set power_save on
I saw that you have the following module parameter set:
rtw_power_mgnt=0
Also try:
rtw_enusbss=0
That disables usb autosuspend.
FYI: There are actually many module parameters in this driver that have to do with power. I only document the one and that has seemed to be adequate but I can document more if we find some that help.
Please let me know if this helps.

I have continued testing on different systems. I still have not seen a situation where the connection is dropped but it can cause short pauses. I am convinced there is a problem but am not sure what is causing it. I did a little deep dive in the code and only made this worse.
I have 3 suspects currently:
background scanning. There are several things that can call for background scans. Do mind investigating this on your systems?
The problem seems to be more pronounced when in USB3 mode.
There could be a problem in the driver code. I have explored enough to know that tracking the problem down is likely above my skill level so would need to find someone that can help track this down.
It may be that going public with this driver is the best thing to do as it makes the repo more accessible and maybe we can track down some help to work this issue. Thoughts?
@morrownr
I think going public is a smart thing to do. In fact, I'm not sure why it was ever private.
The same problem as in other issues. Pings that trigger milliseconds every few seconds. No matter what network I connect to. Whether it is near or far it is the same. The adapter is a TP-Link Archer T4UHP v1 connected to a USB 3, but this error is also seen on a USB 2 port. Front or rear.
