Amend Bylaws to be less Drupal-centric #34

Open froboy opened 4 years ago

froboy commented 4 years ago

Our current bylaws (and website) state:

The Midwest Open Source Alliance (MOSA) promotes the education, support and development of Drupal and related open source software within the Midwest Drupal community.

I think development of Drupal and related... is ok, but I'd recommend modifying the end to within the Midwest Open Source community.

Let's discuss here, then we can officially propose the amendment in the next meeting.

I lean toward "...education, support and development of open source software within the Midwest community" But adding open source to the community isn't a deal breaker for me.

We should look at the non-profit situation though. Specifically, our 501c3 is acceptable because we're an education organisation IIRC. Apparently there's a tricky line to walk there to be sure we're not promoting some kind of thing which folks use for profit if that makes sense.

It certainly isn't a deal breaker for me either. But reading through the bylaws again AND considering the amount of time and effort available as a group so far, I suggest we consider narrowing our mission statement for the time being. Maybe I should make this a separate issue for discussion? Here's what I would suggest instead:

The Midwest Open Source Alliance (MOSA) promotes the education, support and development of Drupal by supporting regional conferences ("camps") within the Midwest Drupal community.

I think we should consider making the support of regional Camps the primary mission, and define any work we do around that mission (accounting assistance, being fiscal stewards, helping with event insurance, legal advice, promotion, coordination). This seems like a lot in itself, even for 2-4 annual camps. But by narrowing the statement, we could have more clarity as to where we prioritize our efforts and spending.

Then, assuming that goes well and gains traction (maybe by adding a few more DrupalCamps to the mix), THEN branch out to other open-source efforts.

I advocate for narrowing the mission until we have more actionable items in place and working.
