STUKguy commented 3 years ago

motionEye Version | 0.41 Motion Version | 4.2.2 OS Version | motionEyeOS 20190911 Device: Raspberry PI4 2GB Previous issue: #2520

Hi, So for some reason my PI will lose its connection from 1 of my 2 USB cameras and then I have to reboot the whole pi to get it to work again. This will happen randomly. Here are the logs messages.log.txt motion.log.txt motioneye.log.txt

There is no power issues it gets a steady 5V3A Screenshot_20201025-002042_Mobile SSH

I've tried different USB ports unsure what else to try.

starbasessd commented 3 years ago

@starbasessd just found out that this install is not storing video files, there are no logs so I can't see why it's not storing video files

starbasessd commented 3 years ago

On RaspberryPiOS or Ubuntu 20.10? What is the path for File Storage?

@starbasessd Raspbian OS and the path is set to custom /cctv/landing

starbasessd commented 3 years ago

Does that path exist?

Going to build an image later today, had to free up the Pi4 4GB. Will advise. May just be a permissions issue to that folder tree.

starbasessd commented 3 years ago

I create the /cctv/landing path on my Pi4 5GB, 128GB, with RaspberryPiOS 20200820, full update & upgrade, and the commands to install motion/motioneye from here: https://github.com/ccrisan/motioneye/wiki/Install-On-Raspbian Added 2 cameras Turned on motion detection on both recorded correctly to /var/lib/motioneye/Camera1 and Camera2 changed File Storage, Custom Path to /cctv/landing in both recorded correctly there, too.

Are any of the recordings there? In Camera1, Camera2, etc? Also, use an _ in folder names, there are issues with spaces and some other characters in path names.

Ive only got a 2GB SD card spare which im going to flash with Raspbian OS it is an old SD card which i only us for my MP3 player.

starbasessd commented 3 years ago

Make sure to use the LITE version, Raspbian desktop and Desktop All Apps are over 4 GB in size on the SDCard. If you are using Raspbian on a Pi4, you can use a USB Drive, instead. You image it the same way. Doesn't have to be a USB3 drive, either, I use anything from USB2-8GB to USB3-128GB drives on my 3B+s and 4B-4GB and -8GB...

Not showing on the network? WiFi? or Ethernet? Depending on your network, on first boot for Raspbian, you can try using 'raspberrypi.local' for the name or address for ssh, most of the time it works...

@starbasessd guess what it worked???? once ive got motion eye set up on it, im going to clone it to a larger SD card and see if i still have problems. Now im concerned if it is a faulty SD card i brought 3 at the same time and one is currently running my PI NAS which luckily hasent had any problems but im not sure if i should replace the SD card to be on the safe side???

starbasessd commented 3 years ago

Asking the wrong person, here. I hate SDCards. The only thing I use them for at this point are OSs that don't support (or can't support) USB Boot, or Net Boot. I have SDCards for Pi2 and up that only have bootcode.bin on them to allow USB or Net Boot. MotionEyeOS is one of the few that have issues, because there is too much hard-coded to mmcblk0px locations...

@starbasessd i take that back it didnt work ran "apt-get update" and i just got a lot of not enough space errors ive found an old 32GB SD card which i will try now. Yeah im not a fan of SD cards either when i actully move into a home with some space im hoping to swap to an actual PC for my NAS and probably an actual DVR system for my CCTV and secuirty but thats a long way off at the moment.

starbasessd commented 3 years ago

Even most USB2 drives are faster than most SDCards, and they don't 'wear out' nearly as fast, either.

starbasessd commented 3 years ago

Not if the SDCard is 32GB and the USB is only 16GB. Same to Same or larger only. Kinda like dd in linux.

@starbasessd damn!!! ok let me see if this flash/build works i have it set up and have left the stroage locations as the default /var/lib/motioneye/Camera2 /var/lib/motioneye/Camera1

i just checked and it is storing videos and both cameras are working, is this version ment to have ftp/smb option? or do i have to go the long way around for ftp/smb i.e. set it up through raspibian??

starbasessd commented 3 years ago

You need to set it up for Raspbian, it's not installed by default. While you are at it, make sure ssh is installed and set up, too. Raspbian can be 'more secure' because the services are not installed by default (vs. motionEyeOS) if you don't need them. A plus, though is you can auto-mount stuff using /etc/fstab and use any protocol yo ulike. Prefer NFS? No problem. FTP or SFTP? No Problem. SMB? again, no problem...

@starbasessd So some how i managed to mess up the SMB guide??? i followed the steps made a slight change to the share folder insted of using /home/pi/shared as mentioned in the guide i used /var/lib/motioneye as this is the only folder i wish to share but on the guide i got to "Looking at the confirguration file" and thats where i think i messed up for my understanding this is what my amendments should look like image but when i use a Windows machine to go to the location i only get this image can you help please?

starbasessd commented 3 years ago

Looks like you are missing a line in your config file. [share_name] which should be above path = /var/lib/motioneye Give me a few, minutes, I'll build it again, install SMB, and get you what you want... But try that...

@starbasessd not sure why but the Motion Eye image i had on OMV5/Docker had my cpu running at 93% for the last 3 days which was also causing it to throttle ive disable the docker image for the moment but the cameras on the other PI seem to be working perfectly.

I just have one for testing (docker setup) but I haven't done any tweaking.

@starbasessd It was out of curiosty i found it, after that logging script you helped me set up i just lookd at it and noticed for about a week the throttle was reading 0x50000 and then all of a sudden it just went away and went back to 0x0 for a few days and then again it jumped upto 0x50000 i posted on the OMV forum but no one there is really interested in helping and normally you get a half sarcastic no help reply anyway so i thought i woud go through the log and the a process list which motion was at the top with 93% usage disable the image and then did a throttle check and everything was ok again.

starbasessd commented 3 years ago

Interesting. I wonder what the build date is/was, and if there have been updates. The thing has an admin password that I haven't been able to find (for modifying the image, not the motionEye admin)
