The camera DH-SD1A404XB-GNR has a stream rtsp://192.168.1.108:554/cam/realmonitor?channel=1&subtype=0 that I can read with VLC. I have set it upp in MotionEye on RPi4 running Home assistant., it opens a window but the window remains grey with out presenting a a live stream.

The iSpy database recommends this URL: rtsp://192.168.1.108:8554/cam/realmonitor?channel=1&subtype=00&authbasic=YWRtaW46YWRtaW4= using your camera's user & password.

This works fine with VLC but not in HA with motioneye or the generic camera. It seems to be difficult to read the codec for HA.

Don't use the HA installation. Uninstall it, and install motionEye from here for your particular setup/OS or use the Docker version.
