This concept needs a little more work (including shifting the SDSS astrometry onto the Gaia/DR2 system), but it's diverging from the main branch a bit too much so I'm going to merge now.
Lots of great developments here, including significant speed-ups of the ellipse module (not just ellipse-fitting but also the curve-of-growth functionality).
