store event_id as character or integer #9

I'm not sure if it's possible to define data types in shapefiles, but to retain the event_ids as a link back to the source data, we'd want to define it as a character value (or at least integer). Currently it displays like this (in QGIS):

while other attributes display as integers:

I am not a GIS expert... if somebody can provide help on this, that would be great
