Thumbnail image momentarily displays below thumbnail block when paginating

What steps will reproduce the problem?

1. Load the page
2. Click on a page number in navigation links
3. A stray thumbnail will momentarily display underneath the main image 
thumbnail block (it doesn't break the display BUT it doesn't look pretty)

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?

I would like an output where no stray thumbnail is momentarily displayed 
underneath the main thumbnails block when transitioning between pages.

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?

Addendum: It is the first thumbnail of the next page that is displayed 
momentarily at the bottom of the thumbnail block when paginating
