Currently backup files go in ${HOME}. This makes searching current and archived history easy, i.e. the hist function can grep ... ~/.bash_history*. However, it also clutters the home dir.
${HOME}
hist
grep ... ~/.bash_history*
Instead of dirs, maybe a better option is to reduce the resolution of the back file, e.g. one archive per year?
