Move share icon to bottom bar #8798

Open jungaretti opened 3 years ago

jungaretti commented 3 years ago

I'm only discussing iOS in this issue. To imagine this feature on iPadOS, replace bottom bar with top bar.

Why/User Benefit/User Problem

Moving the share button to the bottom bar on iOS would make it much easier to share links from Firefox. I think we should copy Safari's design:

Safari's bottom bar on iOS 14

Acceptance Criteria (how do I know when I’m done?)

Move the share button to a top-level UI element so that you can access the share sheet after one tap.

I'm curious to hear what other people think of this request!

I haven't yet contributed to Firefox, but I'm interested in getting started.

If others agree this is a change worth exploring, I could cook up a PR. Newcomer tips appreciated!

I couldn't agree more. It's always a pain in the rear to tap three times (hidden all the way in the three-dot menu) to share/save something.

The share button is no longer just for social media. It's also to copy the URL to a document, save articles to Pocket/Instapaper, add to a note or reminder, airdrop, save as PDF, print...

It's not a feature request, the bottom bar is massive UX bug. And as @rodlikestocode the share button is the way to access some criticical iOS functionality.

I agree, they should start from the Safari design. It's much better than the Firefox one.

Yet, Firefox may want to keep the dropdown menu and don't add the "reading mode" button (instead reading mode button is in the URL when the page is loaded).

Now perhaps need new issues:

I can't upvote this request enough.

THE IOS SHARE SHEET SHOULD BE AVAILABLE IN THE TOOLBAR ONE TAP AWAY, NOT BURIED UNDER A MENU.

I'm moving away from Safari (as much as possible) and Firefox on macos is great. Firefox on ios could be better.

Even chrome has embraced this. Huge UI oversight for iOS and iPad OS. Share sheet is the only way to multitask properly in this environment and renders Firefox an inferior UX.
