WebExtensions Support #9155

Open yoasif opened 2 years ago

yoasif commented 2 years ago

User Problem

Why should we implement this? What is the user benefit?

Parity with Safari: https://developer.apple.com/videos/play/wwdc2021/10104 Other browsers are implementing them: https://www.reddit.com/r/firefox/comments/psl19r/now_that_safari_on_ios_supports_extensions_will/hduz38r/

Also, extensions are good and people want them - see Fenix, for example.

Ideas for Solution

Orion Browser supports Web Extensions from both Firefox and Chrome stores: https://blog.kagi.com/orion-features.

It doesn't support all of them though (cause they can't due to Apple restrictions). It think the best shot of truly getting them to work is porting over Gecko to iOS once the DMA forces Apple to allow more browser engines (eventually)

Hello!

Since this have been made possible with iOS 17.4, does the team have plans to make this happen? :)

Thanks in advance!

@yoasif, should become possible if https://github.com/mozilla-mobile/firefox-ios/issues/19063#issue-2173899149 is accepted.
