Add support for alternative commands for (universal) remotes (like HDMI-CEC) #1308

Why/User Benefit/User Problem

We don't currently support non-standard remotes. We can add telemetry in #1409.

What / Requirements

Add alternative command combinations.

Acceptance Criteria (how do I know when I’m done?)

Add support for other commands. Add documentation

Hello,

the HDMI-CEC backspace on the current Firefox TV v3.0 has sporadically problems to end the Firefox and the performance has generally suffered a bit too.

For example, if YouTube is open, you can not quit Firefox with the backspace key. The Silk Browser has no problem with that.

Various TVs control the Fire TV via HDMI-CEC with the TV remote control. Unfortunately, the home and menu button is missing here.

Example for Samsung TV devices built in 2016-2018 with the Premium Smart Remote: Here is missing from the Fire TV, the home and menu button.

Could you please implement the menu key with a long press when a web page is open in Firefox?

Possibly. you could also assign the buttons to the color buttons on the TV. If these buttons are supported by Fire TV. If I recall correctly, there was also an app called "Ampera" on Fire TV, where it was.

Best regards and have a nice day...

Hey @netz-filter, thank you for filing this bug!

The Youtube bug is something that we're planning on fixing in 4.0 - see #773. Sorry for this experience, we have plans to fix it!

Are there other problems that you're seeing with the backspace, other than this problem with Youtube? If not, I'm going to close this bug and we'll prioritize #773 .

With the back button I noticed no further problems.

Please look again here: #1309

One more question: Are all buttons on the Fire TV remote control programmed with an alternative HDMI-CEC command in the Firefox program code, and where can I find this section of the remote control buttons in the program code/source code?

@netz-filter do you see the problem with exiting on any other site other than Youtube?

Also, we don't yet support alternative HDMI-CEC remote commands, but we can make this a bug for that.

Telemetry to see how often these are used: #1409.

Fire TV 3+Firefox TV pre-release v3.0.1.1

Except for Youtube I could not find any more problems.

As a fallback would be alternative HDMI-CEC commands for the Home and Menu keys would be desirable.

Firefox TV v3.0.2 has already been officially released and added to the Amazon Store?

OT

A similar problem except that someone was looking for a suitable remote control.

In combination with an Echo could man or woman implement the menu and home button as alexa skill?

Another annecdote: my Samsung smart TV remote controls the Fire TV automatically but it doesn't have a home or menu button (only dpad and back).

Firefox TV v3.0.2 has already been officially released and added to the Amazon Store?

Yes but only to a limited set of devices: see our changelog https://github.com/mozilla-mobile/firefox-tv/blob/master/CHANGELOG.md#302---2018-10-30

In combination with an Echo could man or woman implement the menu and home button as alexa skill?

Neat idea: we're looking into voice commands from Alexa skills in #932.
